Selby Star
Weekly Update - Nov. 22, 2019
Dear Selby Families,
A HUGE thank you to our hard-working parent council for their hard work in planning our vendor sale. There was a lot of traffic through our sale and a lot of satisfied shoppers! Thank you to all of our families that were able to come out and support our sale.
Thank you to some amazing family members who have volunteered their time to come in and support with some of our maker space clubs - ie. knitting, coding etc. If you have some extra time to donate, please give the school a call and let us know. Right now we have a knitting club running and a lego club.
Our volleyball season is in full swing (lol). Both of our teams went to NAEC this past week and will each have their own tournaments this coming week. We wish them luck and commend them for their commitment. We are also grateful to our coaches, Mrs. Rowe, Mr. Craig, Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Kemp for the many hours they have donated in order to provide this opportunity.
We are hoping to organize a holiday meal for all Selby students in early December. This will consist of turkey, potatoes, gravy, corn, buns and stuffing. We are hoping to have donations from some community businesses and/or families so if you have any connections or anything to offer, please let us know.
FYI head lice still persists so please be diligent in checking and treating.
Have a wonderful weekend,
K. Witley

INDIGENOUS EDUCATION MONTH
Kwey kwey, She:kon, Taanshi, Greetings, (pronounced Kway, kway, Say go, Tawn shee)
The Limestone Distict School Board area is home to over 7000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. It is the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe (pronounced Ah nish nah bay) and the Haudenosaunee (pronounced Ho den oh show nay). It is also home to Métis, Inuit and First Nations peoples from across Canada. We believe that all students should have an understanding of the distinct cultures, traditions, and histories of First Nations, Métis and Inuit and we highlight this throughout the month of November during Indigenous Education Month, as well as embedding this throughout our year. Throughout this month we will be sharing announcements and using a variety of resources in classrooms that will teach students about the Indigenous people of this area. We are collaborating with local Knowledge Keepers to help guide our learning around the Haudenosaunee land on which Southview Public School is built on. As we move forward in our Call to Action, we hope to embrace a whole school approach to "Positive Mind, Peace, and Inner Peace" as we learn more about the land on which we live, work, and play.

See Yourself in Limestone: Student Census
The Limestone D.S.B. will be conducting an Identity-based data collection in early Spring 2020 for elementary and secondary students in Limestone called “See Yourself in Limestone: Student Census”. Information & sharing sessions are being held with Advisory groups, Community groups, families, and student focus groups during November & December in preparation for the survey. More information for school staffs will be shared in the coming weeks. Regular updates will be provided throughout the year on the Limestone website.
Survey for JK/SK Parents
The LDSB Speech and Language team is partnering with Early Expressions and the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic School Board to offer a parent/educator night in the Spring (location, date/time of workshop to be determined). Kindergarten teachers, ECEs, and parents of students in Kindergarten will be invited to attend. The workshop will focus on oral language – how to support language development at home and in the Kindergarten classroom.
We have created a survey so we can gain a better sense of what topics families/educators are interested in learning more about.
