Roosevelt's Reforms.
Trust Busting.
Roosevelt use the Sherman Antitrust Act to attack big businesses engaging in unfair practices. His victory over the Northern Securities Company, earned him a reputation as a hard-hitting trust buster committed to protecting the public's interest. This pictures shows Roosevelt trying to tame the lions that symbolize the great and powerful companies of that time.
Coal Strike
In this picture it shows how a threatened coal strike got the attention of the President. The president called both sides of the strike and eventually ended it. The president threatened to take over both mines, which lead the two sides to come to an agreement. The president's actions had demonstrated a new principle. From then on, when a strike threatened the public welfare, the federal government was expected to intervene. His actions reflected the belief that arguments can be settled in an orderly way with the help of experts.
Railroad Regulations
With Roosevelt urging, congress passed the Elkins Act, which made it illegal for railroad officials to give, and shippers to receive, rebates for using particular railroads. The act also specified that railroads could not change set rates without notifying the public.
