DMS Chosen as a Challenge Success School for 2015-16
I have great news! Discovery Middle School was chosen as one of twelve schools in the nation to partner with Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education as a Challenge Success School.. They partner with middle and high schools from across the country to provide practical, research-based solutions to stimulate authentic academic engagement, address rising academic and general stress, and promote academic integrity.
The Stanford Survey of Adolescent School Experiences is part of our work with Challenge Success. The Survey is an online, fully anonymous survey; your child’s privacy will be maintained. This survey measures students’ perspectives on homework, extracurricular activities, sleep, physical health, stress, expectations, academic engagement, academic integrity, and teacher support. Over 15,000 students from more than 40 schools have taken the survey over the past few years, and schools have gained a great deal of information from the results of the survey, including what students see as stressful and challenging as well as sources of support within the school. We are asking our students to participate in this survey so that the results can help to guide our school to make changes in particular areas where there is need. The survey will take approximately 30-45 minutes and will be taken at school in our computer lab. There are no risks to your child’s involvement in the study, and the benefits may be that results from the study will provide insight into decreasing academic stress, increasing student engagement, and fostering greater student voice in school. There will be no payment for participation in this survey. Your decision whether or not to have your child participate in this study will not affect your child’s grades in school. Please understand your child’s participation is voluntary, and your child has the right to refuse to answer particular questions.
If you have any questions, please contact me, Melanie Barkley, at (256)837-3735 or the Protocol Director, Denise Pope at (650) 736-1779 or contact the Stanford Institutional Review Board (IRB) to speak to someone independent of the survey/research toll free at 1-866-680-2906. Thank you for your support with this important initiative. I look forward to sharing more information about our work with Challenge Success in the months to come.
If you DO NOT want your child to participate in the survey, please print this form and return it to Counselor Kelle Moody by Friday, May 1st.
