Columbia Heights Public Schools
Quarter 3 Learning Model Update
Quarter 3 Runs Feb. 1-April 7
- Early Childhood | ECFE, ECSE and PreK 3 on-site programming with Heights from Home option
Elementary | Rolling start hybrid instruction (four days per week on-site) starting with PreK 4 and Kindergarten
- Secondary | Modified Hybrid with small groups of identified students receiving on-site support
Regardless of the phase and scenario, families have the opportunity to choose Heights from Home only. Families have already committed to the learning model for quarter 3.
Learning Model Decision
Governor Walz announced Executive Order 20-103 Dec. 16 and the Minnesota Department of Education revised the Safe Learning Plan for the 2020-2021 School Year. Columbia Heights Public Schools (CHPS) has been planning for the implementation of the new guidelines, reviewing results of the Quarter 3 Family Survey and consulting with key leaders.
The District continues to monitor the COVID-19 case rates in our local community which have been decreasing in previous weeks. The health and safety of students, families and staff continue to be a top priority. We understand the impact distance learning and the pandemic has had on the academic, social-emotional development and well-being of our students.
CHPS is a community of learners who rise to challenges and celebrate accomplishments together. Families choosing on-site instruction are required to review daily symptoms prior to sending their student(s) to school. Students must stay home if they have symptoms or are sick. The District also asks families to share a commitment to minimize unnecessary risks for exposure to COVID-19 in order to participate in the safest learning community possible for students, staff and families.
We remain committed to communication and collaboration as a school community. Be well and be safe!
Rolling Start
Grade level bands will be able to start as long as case rates remain below the threshold.
ECFE, ECSE, PreK 3, PreK 4 and K are scheduled to begin on-site Monday, Feb. 1
Grades 1-2 are scheduled to begin on-site Monday, March 1
Grades 3-5 are scheduled to begin on-site Monday, March 15

Supply Pick-Up
CHPS will hold three Supply Pick-Up days at all of the District's schools. Families can pick up all the materials students will need for quarter 3 (PreK 4-Grade 12) at your child's school at any of the days/times below. This coordinated distribution of supplies will make it easy and convenient for families to pick up supplies for all their children.
8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27
9 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28
8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29
Regardless of the learning model your student will participate in, supplies still need to be picked up.
Considerations
Students participating in on-site instruction:
- Shortened school day
- Masks and social distancing
Heights from Home and on-site learners:
- Possible change in teacher
- Specialist day will remain the same, virtual
