Communicating Learning

Communicating Learning (traditionally known as ‘reporting’) happens informally and formally throughout the school year - it is an ongoing process. The online platform we use to do this is called HERO. Parents and caregivers can log in to their HERO account and see all their learning posts, comments and curriculum expectations.

End Of Year Learning Comments - Now Published Ready for Viewing

End of Year Comments, Learning Goals and Achievement Expectation Statements are now published on your child’s HERO account. We endeavor to use simple, honest language that communicates your child's progress and achievement to you.

Information for parents on achievement expectations for students at each year level: https://parents.education.govt.nz/primary-school/learning-at-school/reading-writing-and-maths/#Year1

If you have queries regarding your child's learning and progress, your first point of contact should always be your child/ren’s homeroom teacher.

Building Strong Partnerships with our Community - 2021 Community Survey

The Board was extremely happy with the results of the 2021 Community Survey which will support the ongoing development of our Charter & Strategic Aims. There were some beautiful comments in the survey that we have shared with our staff and now with our community.

We would like to thank all those who participated and gave their whakaaro, opinions and suggestions. We will be actioning some of these key ideas in our 2022 Annual Plan such as:

  1. Reinstating our Hall & Library

  2. Surveying parents on how effective our communications about learning are

  3. Improving our recycling and waste systems in our school

Last Friday we held our annual SOMADD concert. It looked slightly different than previous years with COVID restrictions in place and we missed being able to host everyone at our school. However, we were lucky to be able to live stream and record the event for Whānau and our wider community.

tabloid sports

On Tuesday we had our Tabloid Sports day. The weather did not join the fun, so we changed the format to be indoors, with a range of games inside. There was still plenty of whanau group dress up and face paint!

Thanks Mr Lewis for organising this fun school wide event for our tamariki. It was great seeing the different age groups working together and showing our School Values.

Thanks Kim Sowman for the awesome photos from Tuesday.

year 8 camp

Our Year 8's are currently away at camp at Vertical Horizon. They spent last night roasting marshmallows, singing playing the guitar around the campfire.

While it is not the big camp originally planned (gee, thanks Covid!), we are very fortunate to have been able to get a booking at this great local facility and delighted that we have been able to arrange an alternative camp for them. We know that they will have great memories of it for years to come. Huge thanks to the parents who have given their time to go with them

Ranui Fun

One of the great things about the end of term is celebrating all our hard work with some fun.

Kowhai had a ranui day, partly at Hickford Park, with a giant inflatable slide, games and later a super fun water slide back at school. Rimu stayed at school with a bouncy castle, dress ups, pizza lunch and even an ice cream van. It was SO FUN!

As you may have seen in our Week 6 newsletter, our Home & School sent a submission for the Mitre 10 Helping Hands Project Playground Programme which led to us being gifted $10,000.

Former Puketapu School student Nicole Attrill came to our School this week to present us with our prize.

Thanks you Mitre 10!!! We look foward to putting this money to good use very soon.

One Big Touch Photo - Monday 13 December

We will be taking a combined photo of all our touch players who have played touch at any stage in 2021 on Monday.

Please send your child to school with their touch T-shirt to put on for the photo.

If it is a borrowed shirt, we will collect it after the photo, so please make sure your child has a spare top for after the photo.

Sports Shout Out

Whatever the sport, huge thanks to everyone who has coached a team this year.

We have had to deal with many new ways of doing things and we are grateful for your time, patience, expertise and flexibility.

Thanks also to sideline supporters and whanau who get their children to the game each week.

Again we are grateful for you adapting to new ways of doing things. You are appreciated.

If you haven't already done so, please return all uniforms, coaching bags and sports gear to the office asap.

This year Taylor Harvey has been selected as an XRACE Ambassador. Taylor has participated in the XRACE for 6 years now, 2022 will be his 7th race with his Dad. Last year he was one of the youngest competitors to have been inducted into the Hall of Fame where they get a special black shirt and can start at any point during the race.

XRACE is a fun-filled family event run around the country - where mum or dad must team together with one of the kids (age 6 and 14) and take on the XRACE course and 10 mystery challenges. Challenges range from physical like tug-of-war to puzzling puzzles to artistic challenges.

Buy tickets at www.xrace.co.nz. Due to Taylor being an XRACE ambassador our school has a promotional code that you can pick up from the office that gives you $20 off your family entry.

The New Plymouth Race is at 10 am on the 26th of February 2022 at East End Reserve or you can participate in the Hawera race 6 pm on the 24th of February 2022 at the TSB Hub.

Surf lessons for kids and teens!

Summer is here and it is a great opportunity for kids/teenagers to get into surfing! It is also a great way to spend the holidays in Taranaki. Below you can find a bit of text to include in the newsletter, Facebook or notices. Again thank you so much!

My name is Karine Bödeker and I offer surf lessons for kids and teenagers at Fitzroy beach. I am a certified level 1 ISA surf coach and owner of New Plymouth Surf School.

Surfing is a great way for kids to learn about the ocean and gain new skills. Children and teenagers can learn how to surf in a safe and fun way. For the kids surf groups, there is one instructor per 4 or 5 children, depending on the conditions. Therefore I am able to provide personal coaching for every surfer. The kids surf lessons are always held in the white water waves, close to the beach. My goal is to make your kids happy and introduce them to surfing in a safe way. The lesson is approx. 1 hour water time and it takes almost 1,5 hours in total. Wetsuit and surfboard are included. Cost: $45 per person per lesson. Location: Fitzroy beach.

To book a lesson, please get in touch with Karine Bödeker 0273075842, newplymouthsurfschool@gmail.com
