September is Attendance Awareness Month
Attendance Matters at Corner Middle School
Last Friday, students at Corner Middle School were able to attend the first attendance celebration of the school year. Any student with no more than 3 absences (coded excused or unexcused) were able to attend. The target number to reduce CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM at our school is 90% attendance. Our next celebration will be at the end of the first quarter.
During our advisory period, students were able to get an icy treat, take a break and talk with friends, and were eligible for gift cards in our attendance prize drawing. Attendance gift card winners included Annie Kirkpatrick, Alex Teer, and Ryan Allen. Below are two graphics from the Alabama State Department of Education that outline the academic indicators that make up a school's report card.
CMS Families, you can help us continuously improve what we do and how we help your students by making sure they are at school. While we understand that there are times when your students have to miss school, we also are very aware of the large number of times students who are chronically absent could be at school, but are not.
If your student is ill, he or she should stay at home. But as is evident from listening to your students, social media posts, and a lack of documented excuses, we realize many students are just staying out of school. Please help us help your student by having him or her at school when school is in session. Your student's attendance impacts our staffing for the next school year, funding for the school, and programs we are able to offer at CMS.
Red highlights are for students at or above the 18 absence threshold. Yellow highlights are for students who are between 10 and 17 absences. There is no highlighted cells for students with under 10 absences for the 2021-2022 school year.
The 6 Chronic Absence categories include:
AA - Administrator Approval
DE - Doctor’s Excuse
LG - Legal
OSS - Out of School Suspension
PE - Parent Excuse
UA - Unexcused Absence (Truancy)
Using this data, 114 (26.4%) of our students were chronically absent last year; 172 (39.8%) of our students were considered to be at-risk of chronic absenteeism last year; and 145 (33.6%) of CMS students were regular attendees at school last year.
We share this with our CMS families to help them see how attendance is directly impacting the academic achievement of our students. We are beginning the process of sending out attendance letters for unexcused absences that refer families to Early Warning with the Jefferson Family Court. If you have questions about your student's attendance at school, please feel free to call us at 205-379-3230. Thank you for your continued support of your students and Corner Middle School!
