The Right for Citizens To Rule

The Power Citizens Need

Thesis Statement

Citizens should have a say in the government because of all the people in the community are different and the laws that the government make effect people differently.

In "The Lottery" and in "Harrison Bergeron" both texts show what happens when the government goes to far in controlling the citizens lives. In the lottery it shows what happens when the citizens have no say in what they do. And in Harrison Bergeron it shows what happens when the government goes to far in controlling the citizens lives.

"The Lottery" Quote and Analysis

“Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her.”It isn't fair," she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head. Old Man Warner was saying, "Come on, come on, everyone." Steve Adams was in the front of the crowd of villagers, with Mrs. Graves beside him” ( Jackson 7).

This shows that Mrs. Hutchinson had no choice over whether she will die or not because she said that it’s not fair because when they saw that she had the ticket they then picked up the rocks and stoned her death . If citizens had a choice in what becomes the law they would be able to get rid of the lottery.

"Harrison Bergeron" Quote and Analysis

“It was then that Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, came into the studio with a double-barreled ten-gauge shotgun. She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor” (Vonnegut 7).

This quote shows that their government leader took control of Harrison trying to free the people of their handicaps and then Diana Moon Glampers came in and shot Harrison because he was trying to over throw the government and take control to set them free .

Character Chart

Both of the communities would be better if the citizens had the right to rule. In "The Lottery" if the citizens had a right to say if they want to participate or not then Mrs. Hutchinson wouldn't have had to die. Also in "Harrison Bergeron" if the citizens had a say in the law then they will not have to wear all of those handicaps. With the upcoming election almost here I think that both candidates have big plans for the U.S.
