Smithsonian Institution
The Smithsonian Institution was started by James Smithson in Washington, D.C. James Smithson died in 1829. The institution was called the nation's attic.
When his nephew died in 1835 the institution gave all his books, minerals, and plus 105 bags of gold. He also gave 508,318.46 dollars in 1838 to the government.
We know that the institution has more than 15 museums built in to it. By the twenty- first century it had 1.3 million artifacts in it.
