Principal's Message
It was great to see so many parents and carers at our mathematics information session on Monday. Schooling today is very different to what many of us experienced as children. Much of what happens in the classroom can be a mystery. I know many parents and carers have questions about how to help their child at home but are unsure how to.
Our new community liaison officer Mrs Evangelista has been busy working with staff at the school to develop a series of information sessions or workshops to help parents and carers understand what happens in schools. These sessions are scheduled to run on Mondays. All our parents and carers are welcome to attend. Information of the sessions can be found in the Term 3 calendar included in this newsletter.
There will also be an opportunity later this term for parents and carers to complete a survey on the ways our community liaison officer can work to help build greater connections between home and school. Information will be sent home with students or through Skoolbag later this term.
Congratulations to Vaivai in 6F for his selection as a member of the Sydney South West Region Rugby Union Team. Vaivai and his team mates will be representing the school and our region in the NSW State Rugby Championship later this month. We wish him and the team all the best!
Congratulations as well to our Stage 3 students participating in the Western Sydney Airport Minecraft Competition. Our school made it to the finals with an outstanding design for the new Western Sydney Aerotropolis! This is a fantastic accomplishment as we are one of only ten schools selected from Western Sydney to be given the opportunity to present a final pitch to the judges as to why our school’s design should win. You can see their submission here.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Ian Tapuska
Principal
From the classroom - KD and Miss Drosinos
In Semester 2 KD have drawn, acted, painted, sang, written, typed and danced their way through their first 100 days of Kindergarten! We have enjoyed having fun learning about people and places as part of our integrated geography and English program. We have enjoyed taking part in hands-on learning experiences to explore places and spaces within our local and wider community.
This week we have been learning about the importance of caring for important places in our community. We have explored park and playgrounds and talked about how to care for these places and why it is important. We designed and made our own park and painted pictures to go along with it. We have made amazing progress in our writing and we now know over 50 sight words and all our letter sounds!
From the classroom - 6P and Miss Ross
Throughout Semester 1 6P have been using hands-on techniques to build their knowledge in mathematics.
We started by using fairy bread to explore the concept of fractions. Students were told that this was the only time Miss Ross ever wants to see them playing with their food. Then we moved on and discovered ways to represent a packet of skittles in fractions, decimals and percentages.
Most recently, students have been using the game “Area Hysteria” to investigate the concept of area where pairs roll 2 dice, which each represent height and length. They use these to create a shape and measure the area. The student with the most area covered on the board, wins!!
We love hands-on learning!
From the Deputy Principals - Mrs Alfaro and Mrs Vajdevski
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to our August newsletter.
Education Week: Open Day and Book Parade
Next week is Education Week. The theme for 2019 Education Week is Every student, every voice. Story Factory News
We have been extremely lucky to have had Story Factory at Liverpool Public School where they have worked with 3/4V and 4W. This term 4M and 4/5G will have this wonderful opportunity to develop their imagination and writing skills.

From the Classroom - 1/2T and Mrs Moore
Students in 1/2T have been learning about how to represent data with objects and drawings where one drawing represents one data value. Students have collected, checked and classified data on familiar topics and displayed their data in picture graphs, as well as bar graphs. They particularly enjoyed using Skittles to sort, display and interpret data. Students are working hard to use comparative language when describing information presented in simple data displays.
The Leader in Me
During Term 3 ‘The Leader in Me’ framework will focus students on the qualities of a good leader. They will learn about different inspirational leaders and their qualities.
Students will be involved in adding to their class mission statements and talking about what qualities they feel they have as leader in our school.
Liverpool Public School believes that together, we can help our students to be great leaders. We need your support to make our students great leaders!
Here are some ideas:
- Read/tell a story about a leader you admire
- Discuss what qualities that leader has
- Talk about what kind of a leader your child would like to be.
From the classroom - 4M and Miss Maharaj
In Term 2, 4M put together their first class newspaper. Here is a few examples of the articles the students put together for their newspaper. Each student put a lot of effort into their articles and thought about the purpose of their texts.
They will continue this work by applying their skills towards creating their individual websites.
Mathematics Information Session
Thank you to the parents and carers who attended our Mathematics Information session on Monday 29 July. Mrs Vajdevski and Mrs Helweh presented a great session on how parents and carers can support their child at home with mathematics.
We have received great feedback with parents finding this session very informative and encouraging.
This Maths A-Z glossary was shared with parents and carers who attended and provides straightforward explanations and illustrated examples of maths terms used in the classroom.
Friends of Liverpool
We look forward to seeing you all next week!

Community Language - Arabic and Hindi
The Community Languages classrooms continue to bring fun and exciting experiences for students to learn and grow as leaders. Stage 2 students have been learning about describing characters using a wide range of adjectives. They had the opportunity to paint and describe their favourite character based on their own understanding and descriptions. For their wonderful effort, Stage 2 students were rewarded a cooking lesson at the end of Term 2 where they made hummus and coconut balls. This term Stage 2 will engage in a variety of learning activities to enrich their Arabic and Hindi vocabulary bank.
Stage 3 students have been learning about native Arabic and Indian animals such as the camel, the horse and the tiger. Students learned to find and retell key information from different factual texts. This term Stage 3 students will be learning about some aspects of the Arabic and Indian culture such as food and costumes.

Gardening News
Many children spent time emptying a garden bed that was filled with nutgrass. When this task was complete, it was time to celebrate! The children later filled the garden bed with fresh, healthy soil, manure and straw, ready for use in class projects on plant growth.
Chrestina 3/4V, Sanya 3/4V, Tanisha 3/4V and Mia 3/4V.
After their hard work, children always scout for food in the garden to reward themselves with. As the orange tree was a fruit, this was a real hit for most...but some found the oranges a little too sour! Luckily, there were some home-grown mandarins to eat as well! Students also learned to make cuttings of woody herbs (including rosemary).
Govana 4/5G, Melak 5/6K, Asala 5R and Masa 5R.
Two girls took a few silver beet leaves home with them, to share with their neighbour. They learnt how to make "the best dolmas!". Look out for the recipe in the next newsletter.
We have also been looking at beautiful flowering shrubs that we could put in the front garden. These include: croweas, banksias and eriostemons. They look beautiful to us and also provide a food source for native wildlife.
If anyone would like to visit the vegetable garden, or learn about it, just let me know (via the office staff).
Tip: Did you know that some food scraps can be easily regrown? Try onions and potatoes for example. Here's a how-to guide: https://www.buzzfeed.com/jesseszewczyk/16-food-scraps-that-you-can-regrow
All the best,
Karina
