2021/2022 BOCES PRESENTATION
COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
The School Counseling Center recommends that all college applications be submitted by December 1st, regardless of a school’s specific application deadline. This will allow you time to receive acceptance letters and financial aid packages and make an informed decision about which college you will attend.
There are three main ways to apply to college online. You can apply through the Common Application, the SUNY Application, or through Individual College Applications.
The Common Application allows you to use the same application to apply to over 500 colleges/universities. You should use the Common Application if you are applying to a mix of private and SUNY 4 year colleges. Please be aware that this application is very detailed and may take several days to complete. The common application contains sections that both teachers and school counselors must complete. Please notify all who you plan to use as a reference well in advance and ask them to watch for an invitation.
The SUNY Application (www.suny.edu) allows you to use the same admission application to apply to any SUNY college/university. SUNY Viewbooks are available in the Counseling Center to assist with this application. Each school has specific supplemental requirements, so take the time to familiarize yourself with specific admission criteria. You should use the SUNY Application if you plan to apply to only 4 year SUNY schools.
You should use Individual College Applications for any school not included on the Common Application and for all 2 year schools.
For example, A student applying to Canisius, University at Buffalo, Buffalo State, and Niagara University would use the Common Application. A student applying to SUNY Brockport, SUNY Fredonia, University at Buffalo, and Buffalo State would use the SUNY Application. A student applying to Slippery Rock University (not included in the Common App), NCCC, and ECC would use separate individual college applications found at the college's websites directly.
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
A FASFA presentation was held virtually on October 13th. You can access the recording of this presentation, as well as, important information about financial aid on the Counseling Center website.
College-bound Seniors who have not completed the FAFSA should do so as soon as possible. The FAFSA can be accessed on the web. Financial aid letters are sent directly from the colleges to which students have applied. Seniors should review these, making necessary changes prior to enrollment.
In addition, Seniors planning to attend college in New York State should not forget to apply for TAP (Tuition Assistance Program). Applications can be accessed on the web through the HESC website. Questions about financial aid packages should be directed to each individual college.
