PANTHER PRESS
2/15/2019 Edition
Mrs. Pogue and Mrs. Trevillyan's Preschool Classes
We have been enjoying the amazing sensory path that the Knoxville Elementary PTO has funded in West Elementary. With all the cold weather we have not been able to go outside and this provides a creative and educational opportunity for our kids to learn and move at the same time. We are so grateful to have this in our building.

100 Days in Kindergarten
Kindergarten celebrated 100 Days of School last week! It was so much fun! We made hats with 100 things on them, counted by 10’s and 1’s to 100, did 100 exercises, ate a “100” snack, made necklaces with 100 beads, tried stacking 100 cups, saw what it would look like to be 100 years old, and thought about what we would buy with $100! We even compared Kindergarteners now to Kindergarteners in 100 yearsJ.

Caring First Graders

Second Grade Visitors
We have had many exciting visitors in second grade: Miss Mary Strawberry (who shared roasted garbanzo beans and hummus on a whole grain tortilla), Dexter the dog, Officer Keller, and Emily VanGent from Many Hands for Haiti. Students also worked in teams to brainstorm ways that we can help others.

8th Grade Math
The 8th grade math classes are creating dilation cartoons this week. The students will be taking 4 inch cartoon pictures and recreating them as 4-7 foot cartoons. Each student will be working with a scale factor and testing their measuring skills. The kids will be documenting their progress on iPads, to share with the community at the end of the project. Follow the KMS facebook and twitter accounts to see their amazing final projects.
February is Local Scholarship Application Month
Paper copies of KHS's annual local scholarships are available in the school counseling office during February. Most all applications are due back to the counseling secretary by March 1.
The KPSF (Knoxville Panther Scholarship Foundation) application is the scholarship which every student who has applied in the past has received. This scholarship is also available in the school counseling office. Become familiar with the organization's website at www.kpsfoundation.org. The KPSF scholarship is renewable during the four years of college after high school. The website is where you will access annual scholarships after high school.

Attention Parents of 6th Grade and 11th Grade Students!
There are immunization updates required for students when they enter 7th grade and become seniors. Now is the time to think about getting the updates. There is no grace period so: Up-to-date immunization records (or a valid medical or religious exemption) must be turned in before the first day of school in the fall so your student can be in school.
- Entering 7th grade: in addition to the Tdap requirement already in place for 7th graders, there is a requirement for 1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine on or after 10 years of age and grade 7 if born after September 15, 2004.
- Entering 12th grade: the requirement is for TWO doses of Meningococcal vaccine for those entering 12th grade if born after September 15, 1999 OR 1 dose if received when the student is 16 years of age or older.
Immunization records can be turned in at the school office or faxed to the Knoxville Middle School: 641-842-5754 OR Knoxville High School: 641-842-2066. Forms can also be emailed to the school nurse at angie.mitchell@kcsd.k12.ia.us. Please contact the nurse with any questions.
