Oak Harbor High School is hosting an Oak Harbor Village Council candidates debate October 4, 2017
Oak Harbor High School will again host an Oak Harbor Village Council candidates debate on October 4, 2017. Incumbents Jackie Macko and Michelle Ish, and newcomer Barry Hall, will each field questions from students at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, in Oak Harbor High School’s auditorium.
The program gives students the opportunity to ask questions important to their communities. Students prepare for the debates by studying local issues as part of their class curriculum.
The debate will stream live from the Register’s Facebook page and be available for on-demand viewing at sanduskyregister.com.
Oak Harbor’s council consists of six elected members who vote on matters impacting residents, including the use of tax dollars, police operations and infrastructure.

This week B-C-S is featuring President of The Rocket Family Group, Laura Snodgrass
1. Please tell us what the Rocket Family Group is and some current activities going on so far this year?
Rocket Family Group is the parent group at OHMS. We strive to enrich the middle school experience. RFG hosts fun events, social events and raise money for students and classroom needs. We host a GIANT TRADING EVENT twice a year to collect Box Tops. Students trade their Box Tops for raffle tickets. They put the tickets into buckets with prizes that they'd most like to win. Recently, some of our most popular prizes were drone flying lessons, retractable Army headphones, s’mores kits, and glow in the dark yo-yos from State Farm. Just for fun, we hosted a Pull-Up-Palooza. The Army brought the equipment and challenged students. We had cheering, chanting and lots of fun. 171 students cranked out over 1,400 pull-ups, in less than 3 hours. We are currently working on plans and funds to add a GaGa Ball Pit and additional tables and benches to the outdoor recess area.
2. What do you enjoy most about being part of B-C-S Schools as a parent?
As a parent in the BCS school district, I think the administration and staff are just amazing. They care. They work hard. They go above and beyond.
3. How can parents get involved with the Rocket Family Group?
At OHMS, families fill out a RFG Volunteer Form at the beginning of the year. They indicate how they can volunteer. We need all types of help from Pinterest addicted crafty people to those willing to send in coffee! We work off those forms as the need arises.
4. What are some of your hobbies?
I go to Book Club once a month. I love to travel. I recommend Ann Arbor for a day trip and a long weekend in NYC for some holiday fun.
5. What is your favorite movie?
Movie- Mama Mia is great. I also love Ocean's 11, 12 & 13.

R.C. Waters Elementary Earns State Award on Building Climate
The R.C. Waters Elementary School recently earned the bronze award from the state for their implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The state recognized the school's "pioneering work" in the region to improve the climate of the building.
Mary Schlievert, speech pathologist for the school commented:
"Our PBIS team of 7 staff members has worked very hard at R.C. Waters to teach positive behavior to all students, especially those who are just beginning their educational journey and may not have been formally taught rules before. It is more difficult to tell students what you want and expect them to do, than telling them what NOT to do--this takes a lot of creative thinking and effort. It takes time to notice and comment when students are behaving, and not just respond (and draw attention) to problems. It's great to have just 3 school wide rules--Be ready, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful--so that all teachers and staff can enforce the rules, and students are not confused by different language in different learning environments. Hopefully, we lay the groundwork for expectations so that as students move through all the buildings, they automatically know and can demonstrate appropriate behavior. It is rewarding to win this award because we have spent a lot of time creating the behavior matrices for all areas of school, and purposefully teaching them to students. It's like getting positive reinforcement for our behavior as educators!"
R.C. Waters Principal Dawn Bryant stated that: "We are very proud to have received this award. All staff in the building are involved with PBISfrom teachers to assistants to secretaries. This is our third year of implementing the PBIS system and we absolutely see the difference that using PBIS has made in our building. Visitors to our building have made positive comments on student behavior. We will continue to modify and develop our system each year based on our data and identified needs."
Also proud of the award, Assistant Principal Angie Lipstraw noted that: "Our students and staff have worked very had to model and meet the high expectations we have set for our building (Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Responsible). We have seen an improvement in student behavior during assemblies, emergency drills, and daily routines. Class Dojo has been effective in rewarding students and communicating with our families. Overall, PBIS has supported our students and staff by providing a positive, safe environment that is conducive to learning."
B-C-S Superintendent Guy Parmigian applauded the fact that the R.C. Waters PBIS team is on the cutting edge in the region. Parmigian commented that "PBIS proactively and strategically helps our students to be the best learners they can be."
