Hubbard Woods Update
May 9, 2022
Principal Update:
Dear Hubbard Woods Families,
I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend. We are all excited to have beautiful weather this week- hopefully not too hot!
With the recent uptick in our District Covid numbers, we are encouraging all students and staff to wear masks on the buses for our field trips. These include the Botanic Gardens and Camp Edwards this week. We are hopeful that this precaution will help our students and families feel it is safe for them to attend.
We have begun the placement process at Hubbard Woods. During placement, we place students into cohorts-not by teachers. Teacher assignments WILL change as registration is completed. Our numbers for both first and third grade are borderline for needing a fourth section. We place students into both three and four sections to be prepared for this possibility. Kindergarten and second will both have four sections at this point and fourth grade will have three. As the sections solidify, I will move teachers based on the best fit. Please remember that our teachers are certified for many grade levels. The craft of teaching can be applied to any grade level, it is the curriculum that changes. Our grade-level teams work and plan together ensuring anyone new to a grade level has support from teachers with experience at that grade.
Please remind students not to park their bikes near the kindergarten turn-around. This has been deemed unsafe. Students should lock their bikes at all times as bikes have been stolen from school grounds.
MAP testing will begin this week.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Beth Carmody
Elementary Principal Update-Repeat
Dear Winnetka Families,
MAP Testing- Grades 3-8
Our third testing window for the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test is between May 9 and May 20th. Your child’s school or teacher will inform you of his or her specific testing dates. Make-up tests will occur as needed.
All students in Grades 3 - 8 will take one Reading Test and one Math test. MAP is a computer-adaptive test, which means every student receives a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions. This provides a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student’s learning level. The purpose of the third testing session is to provide an overview of a student’s growth and achievement for the school year. Your child’s MAP Progress Report will be sent out on Friday, June 3rd.
Information regarding MAP can also be found on the District website at winnetka36.org/Page/334. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact your principal or ITL Director Barry Rodgers.
Sincerely,
Beth Carmody, Hubbard Woods
Joshua Swanner, Greeley
Luke Livingston, Crow Island

Bike Safety Initiatives
As we enjoy more spring-like weather, more students will be riding bikes and walking to school. The District and Winnetka Police Department recently sent this letter to our school community on Bike Safety efforts.
In the letter, we shared information on safety pledges for students, safe route maps for each elementary school, and noted we are reintroducing the elementary “Bike Rodeo” event for second grade, hosted collaboratively with Scout Troop 20, Green Bay Cycles, and our school PTOs on the following dates:
Hubbard Woods: Wed, 5/11, 4:00pm (5/12 rain date)
Crow Island: Wed, 5/18, 4:00pm (5/19 rain date). The Winnetka Police will be present at this particular event for community engagement and photo opportunities.
At this event, second grade students will learn basic guidance about proper bike and helmet use. If your family is unable to attend the event at your child(ren)’s home school, you are welcome to attend another event.
Animal Care Opportunity
ATTENTION all lovers of rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, reptiles, birds and other small animals! Winnetka's Adventures in Learning/AnimalCare Class is back this summer. If your child's small animal is due for a brief break this summer, please email Anna at animal.care.adventures@gmail.com. If it is time to pass your pet on to another loving family, we can also try to arrange adoptions.
