Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Lockout and Lockdown?
The term "Lockout" is used when there is a potential threat that can be mitigated by bringing everyone inside. It should be announced with the directive "Secure the Perimeter" which signals teachers and staff to lock exterior doors. While it calls for heightened situational awareness, it allows for indoor activities to continue.
The term "Lockdown" means there is an active or imminent threat inside or nearby requiring immediate protective action. It is followed by the directive "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" and requires locking classroom doors, turning out the lights, and remaining quiet and out of sight until first responders arrive.
If the threat is outside the building, Lockout. If the threat is inside the building, Lockdown.
What if the threat is close to the building?
Can I self-evacuate during a Lockdown ?
Yes, evacuate if an opportunity presents itself. Run to the nearest safe evacuation location, and move as far away from the building as possible. When considering evacuation remember windows can be used as an evacuation route. It is important to remember that a lull in the shooting does not mean the active shooter is done. They could be lying down and waiting for people to appear in hallways or doors. If you have any question where the intruder is, or you feel evacuation is not possible, you should secure your students in a safe location.
WHAT IF A SHOOTER COMES IN THE ROOM?
WHAT IF I AM IN THE HALL DURING A LOCKDOWN?
Use cover and concealment techniques.
Cover is the place you want to be when bullets start to fly because it is anything that will stop said bullets. A concrete wall, a telephone pole, a car's engine block; these are all places where you can hide and know that a bullet will not pass through to you. It can be said that cover hides you from a bullet.
Concealment, however, is not the place you want to be when bullets start to fly. Concealment does not stop bullets. These are things like hollow core wooden doors, wooden fences, car doors. All of these things a bullet will pass through and has the potential to hit you. All concealment does is hide you from sight. Keep in mind that all cover is concealment, since it hides you from both bullets and from sight, but not all concealment is cover.
