Fighting in Schools
“Advocacy groups and education lawyers say that expulsions and suspensions from schools have spiked statewide, the most common reason being fighting” according to an article published on Nov. 18. At Godwin Heights, we are noticing a similar trend. As our students re-acclimate to being in school, this can cause increased anxiety and more serious behavior, which can lead to emotional dysregulation. According to the article, suspensions and expulsions statewide have increased 600% since 2019.
As a district, we are supporting students to the best of our ability by providing lessons on appropriate behavior, social emotional lessons, restorative conversations, as well as time to build relationships with peers and staff. We have also given them strategies to use to calm down or find solutions before a disagreement gets out of hand.
Fighting, and/or Assault, is prohibited by our Student Code of Conduct. Students who fight will be subject to disciplinary action and loss of privileges in extracurricular and/or athletic activities.
Please consider talking to your teen about strategies they can use to avoid fighting. Some of these might include:
Stop, Think, and Breathe: Don’t let your emotions control you.
Remove yourself from the situation.
Find an adult to help support a conversation to resolve the conflict.
Support your friends/peers by removing them from situations that might lead to aggressive behavior.
