2nd Grade Newsletter
February 2020
Language Arts
We will begin Quarter 3 with reading literature texts, specifically fables and fairy tales. We will be discussing character traits, message or theme of the story, and different versions of the same story. Later in the month, we will be reading informational text (non-fiction). We will be identifying main idea and details of multi informational paragraphs and paraphrasing the information.
As always, students will continue using The Fab 4 reading strategies to monitor their comprehension as they read. We use these strategies (predicting, clarifying, questioning, summarizing) in all of our reading to help deepen understanding of a variety of topics.
The focus for writing shifts to opinion writing. Students will learn the difference between fact and opinion and share opinions about their favorite books, characters, and other topics. This writing will teach them how to not only form an opinion, but how to support their opinions with reasons and evidence, ultimately trying to persuade others about a variety topics.
Students will learn to use specific vocabulary and structures used by studied mentor texts in writing.
Parent Resources:
Math
Students will continue to demonstrate understanding of numbers up to 1,000. They will use place value to write numbers in a variety of ways and compare numbers to determine greater than or less than. They will develop stronger skills of explaining math reasoning and using learned math vocabulary.
We will continue to learn and use a variety of efficient strategies for solving 3-digit addition and subtraction problems. It is important for students to be able to communicate how a strategy is used to solve a given problem. We will be looking for students to show effective use of strategies, as well as, communicating how the strategy works. You can help them practice this by asking them to explain some of their strategies and prove or argue their answer.
Please continue to reinforce the practice of both addition and subtraction facts up to 20. XtraMath is proving to be an effective strategy for increasing fact automaticity. Consistent practice = stronger fact fluency.
