Unit 02
Energizers (5 min)
Below you will find a new spin on some energizers you may have already used in your classroom. Feel free to continue to use the other energizers listed in Unit 01 by clicking here: http://bit.ly/2evd1Dc.
I was walking down the street: Work with a partner to find the problem using order of operations.
Example: I was walking down the street and I heard Shonda say the answer was 12, what could have been the problem?
It could have been 100-(2(11x4))

5.OE.1- Introduction to Order of Operations (p.7-11)
5.OE.1 connects the rules for solving order of operations problems with the solving a multi-step problem. Once students have established that there is a right way to solve a multi-step problem, which is an order of operations problem in disguise, the rules for solving order of operations problems are introduced. Then the students and teacher create a personal
anchor chart to help students understand and remember the correct order that should be used to solve problems with multiple operations.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)5.OE.2 - Order of Operations Card Sort (p.12-15)
In 5.OE.2 Ramp Up, students use a card sort to simplify numerical expressions.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)
5.OE.4 - Fill-in-the-Blanks Order of Operations (p.23-28)
In 5.OE.4 Ramp Up, students are given partially filled out order of operations problems and solutions. Their task is
to fill in the blanks. This type of activity helps students focus on the correct process for writing order of operations solutions
and helps them pay more attention to the operations.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)
5.OE.5 - Find the Mistake (p.29-35)
In 5.OE.5 Ramp Up, the problems are worked wrong and include mistakes students commonly make when
simplifying numerical expressions.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)
5.OE.5 - Find the Mistake (p.36-45)
In 5.OE.6 Ramp Up, the problems are worked wrong and include mistakes students commonly make when
simplifying numerical expressions.
Note: The problems in this activity are more challenging than the problems in 5.OE.5 Ramp Up.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)
5.OE.7 - Order of Operations Classroom Challenge (p.46-52)
5.OE.7 is an open-ended challenge where students create numerical expressions that simplify to a given number.
Note: This activity is based on a long-standing math game that has become a world-wide contest called “24”. Other activities
like this are located at www.24game.com.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)
5.OE.8 - Word Problems and Equations Fill in the Blank (p.53-61)
In 5.OE.8 Ramp Up, students work with three types of representations of problems that have missing information:
• A verbal description of a problem situation
• An equation that is written in words
• An equation that is written using numbers and symbols.
Their goal is to fill in the missing information and solve the problem.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)
5.OE.9 - Order of Operations (p.62-71)
5.OE.9 Ramp Up is a four corners activity. The teacher will project a problem. Students will choose which equation
they think is correct and defend their choice.
Note: Problems #2 and #3 each have more than one right answer.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)
5.OE.10 - Order of Operations (p.72-78)
In Activity 5.OE.10, students write word problems to match equations. Then the teacher facilitates a whole class
discussion using the problems that students wrote.
(Click the box labeled "Order of Operations and Equations" above for the link to the activities)
5.OE.11 - Equations and Word Problems (p.79-84)
In Activity 5.OE.11 Ramp Up, students write equations to match problems and write problems to match equations.
Then they use order of operations to solve the problems.

COMING SOON . . .
In an effort to have this available for planning, it is not entirely finished and I apologize. I will be adding two songs here for composite numbers and prime numbers. Please check back soon!

Task Cards - There are only 4 task cards in this bunch, but they are successive, so you have to do card #1 to be able to do card #2. Each pair of students started out with Task Card #1. When they finished Task #1, look over the work then give them Task #2, then Task #3, etc.
Scroll to the middle of the blog to download the three additional scenario cards for FREE.
