SOARING EAGLE NEWS
FEBRUARY 2023
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
When a student is absent from school for any reason, parents are to send in a written note to the teacher explaining the absence or email the school at cypresswoodses.absence@pcsb.org and copy the teacher on the email. Absences will remain unexcused until such documentation is received by the school. Children with poor attendance patterns may be referred to the Pinellas County Truancy Intervention Program. Class work is required to be made up during or after an excused absence. Upon returning to school following an excused absence, a student has as many days to make up the work as days absent. A doctor’s note is required to excuse a student from PE for more than 3 days and documentation is required for absences exceeding 5 days. Below are some helpful hints to help your student maintain healthy attendance habits.

CWE KINDNESS TREE
Cypress Woods has been celebrating KINDNESS all month in January. Kindness is the Character Trait for the month. Ms. Penny helped create our beautiful Kindness Tree in the Media Center. All students have worked on demonstrating a kind deed to earn a heart on the kindness tree with their name on it. Everyday, the hearts are collected and one random heart is chosen on the morning news program by a member of the Kindness Club. The daily winner earns a heart sticker, kindness bracelet, and kindness coin. All hearts are displayed on the kindness tree. Our Kindness Tree has grown with all the kind deeds.
The Kindness Club members in 5th grade have been spreading kindness by hanging kindness posters around the hallways and reading Kindness Books to PreK, Kindergarten, and Second Grade classrooms.
Pictured below are a few of our Kindness Nominations for the Character Trait of the month. Katherine, Miles and Montgomery were nominated for the Kindness Award by their classmates and teacher.

What’s Going ‘Round?
As always, I’m busy in the clinic tracking illnesses around campus. Flu and Covid-19 continue to circulate, but at lower numbers than prewinter break. (Yay!) However, we have seen an uptick in Lice cases and Strep infections. (Booooo!)
I continue to encourage families to check their children’s hair routinely. (Once a week, take a peek!) If a case of lice is detected in your child’s classroom, we will send home a letter letting you know as a courtesy. Additionally, if you discover lice or nits on your child, it is helpful if you let us know!
Strep can look different from person to person. While some kids might look very ill, others won’t be as bothered by symptoms. In addition to the standard sore throat and painful swallowing, some other signs and symptoms of strep throat may include:
- Tender, swollen lymph nodes (glands) in the front of the neck
- Fever
- Red spots on the roof of the mouth
- Swollen and red tonsils; white patches on occasion
- Headache
- Nausea or vomiting and stomach pain
- Fine sandpaper-like rash, also known as scarlet fever
Strep throat typically does not cause a bad cough, profuse runny nose, ulcers in the throat, or laryngitis. If your child has these other symptoms in addition to a sore throat, you can be fairly sure they do NOT have strep.
If you suspect your child has strep throat you should see your pediatrician. Students may return to school 24 hours after starting antibiotic treatment, are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication and are feeling well enough to attend class.
In honor of Valentine’s Day remember:
Love is in the air, but so are illnesses! Wash Your Hands!

SAFETY PATROL OF THE MONTH
“Martin Shaker is such a kind, empathetic and loving young gentlemen to our pre-k friends. He has made a special bond with one of our little friends here in pre-k who comes in almost every day crying and as soon as he sees Martin, he has a smile on his face and they laugh together. It is really so beautiful to see at a young age, how Martin takes time to get to know others and cares about them. Thank you, Martin! We love you down here in pre-k “😊
