Checking In

I have enjoyed meeting with all of you to discuss the emotional and academic development of your child. Now that conferences are winding down, newsletters should come a little more frequently. Please note that we will have a field trip to Hickory Nut Gap Farm next week. Now that we have gotten approval, we will send home the permission slips in the next few days.

Last week, we started a study of attributes. We have been using attributes to describe things more exactly and to compare and contrast in all subject areas. In math, we have been discussing the attributes of two-dimensional shapes. In science, we used a Venn diagram to compare and contrast cucurbits (squash, pumpkins and gourds) and on Friday, students participated in a taste test. They did not LOVE everything, but they were willing to try everything. This week, we are continuing to focus on geometry and will have an introduction to perimeter.

Students should be recording their homework assignments and nightly reading on a daily basis. On the nights we do not have homework, I will have the students write "No Homework" in their planner so you know they actually do not have homework. Thanks for helping your child with this process.

Community Resiliency Model Training

Many of us will not be able to take advantage of this opportunity, but if you happen to be free tomorrow afternoon (Oct. 13) from 12-1:30, please consider attending this training. It is simple, yet powerful, and can positively impact your mental health and how you deal with those around you. Here is the link to the Parent U flyer, in case you missed it. I participated in more extensive CRM training this summer and would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Scholastic Reading Club

Your child will be bringing home a scholastic book order this week. Here is the link if you prefer to order online. Our class code is HQ899. This is a great way to find books your child is interested in reading and earn free books for our classroom, too.
