WBMS Friday Notes

Reflections from Ms. Williams
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
Once again, WBMS was buzzing with activities this week both inside and outside of our classrooms. During classroom visits this week I saw students actively exploring common misconceptions with a text’s theme, graphing and analyzing how a country’s literacy rate and poverty rate correlate and determining what factors form a country’s standard of living, designing and building chairs for someone with autism (that will be used in our very own sensory room), programming a robot, digging for fossils, making homemade pizzas, designing and creating artistic birds from soda cans, and so much more. Student-centered learning is alive and well at WBMS! Outside of class time, we are equally busy. We are celebrating Hispanic Heritage month; many students walked or biked to school on Wednesday; our soccer team won and illustrated excellent sportsmanship, and our chorus students Wowed a packed house on Thursday night. Busy, busy week!
In addition to all our fun, I want to ensure you know about two items:
- Our new student information system started automated attendance calls and emails this week. An automated call goes to any student who was absent for one or more periods regardless of whether or not the absence was pre-approved or the parent checked the student out. Therefore, if you receive a call or email asking you to bring in a note and you have already submitted a note, please disregard.
- Remember next Friday, October 11th is a teacher work day, so no students will report to school and Monday, October 14th all Fulton County schools are closed.
As always, enjoy your time together as a family this weekend. According to the weather, we may even get to relish in some fall weather on Saturday! Woohoo!

Device Care
Families, please reinforce to students the importance of taking extra care to avoid damage to the new Dell laptops.
- Students should take extra care in packing and carrying their backpacks, or carry the device in a separate bag if their backpack is extra heavy.
- NO food or drink should be near the device and the charger cable should be unplugged before the device is put in a bag.
- Students should insure that no pens, earbuds, or other materials are on the keyboard before they close the lid.
- Laptops should be closed before carrying (not open or held by a corner) and should be placed on top of, not under, books and heavy items.
Thank you for reviewing these expectations with your children; all of the situations listed above have resulted in damage (and fines) and we hope to avoid more.
Thanks,
Nan Trowell Brown

Webb Bridge and Taylor Road Middle and Alpharetta and Chattahoochee High Schools’ parents and guardians are invited to attend a digital citizenship learning session on Monday, October 21st, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Chattahoochee High School Auditorium.
Detective Laurie Nicholson from the Alpharetta Police Department has been working crimes against children for approximately 6 years and is on the Speakers Bureau of the GBI Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. She also has 11 years of previous experience in APD in a variety of different positions from Patrol to DUI. In this session, she will address some of the issues our students are encountering on the internet and what parents and guardians can do to help their children in this area. Due to the sensitive content of the information shared, this is an adult-only event. This Common Sense Media article outlines some concerns related to online privacy and children.

FBLA
The task this week for FBLA was to complete the fall membership drive and to order the official FBLA t-shirts. The shirts will be a gold color and will have an appropriate phrase on the back of the shirt that will mirror a few of the WBMS value words. I am especially proud of the Leadership Team who worked diligently on the t-shirt color choice and design. We have pushed our first meeting from the October 11 date (a day off for the students) to the following week on Friday, October 18. At that time, we will meet in the Media Center at 7:50 a.m. to conduct our leadership and new member initiation ceremony, a review of the LEAD program, and beginning discussions on the Regional Leadership Conference online events. We look forward to seeing all of our 85+ chapter members at our October 18th meeting! If you have any questions, go to https://wbms-fbla.weebly.com to view the current meeting dates as well as past meeting presentations.
