What is Mass Hysteria

In sociology and psychology, mass hysteria (also known as collective hysteria, group hysteria, or collective obsessional behavior) is a phenomenon that transmits collective delusions of threats, whether real or imaginary, through a population in society as a result of rumors and fear. In medicine, the term is used to describe the spontaneous manifestation of the same or similar hysterical physical symptoms by more than one person.

What event spurred the hysteria?

The Crucible


What spurred the hysteria in The Crucible was when Abigail & Betty started accusing innocent people of witchcraft. This brought about The Salem Witch Trials. The girls accused the innocent of witchery and had them imprisoned, tried , and even executed. This brought about hysteria because now everyone knows that their fate is in the hands of a group of girls.

Terrorist attacks on The Pentagon & Twin Towers spurred the hysteria, bringing about the fear that it could happen again and other planes may get hijacked.

How were peoples lives impacted?

the Salem witchtrials impacted their lives because the most trusted and noble people were losing their credibility.

innocent people were being tried and killed bringing sorrow to their friends and family and also chaos.
