Technology/Social Media Tip
Learn to Code With Your Children: Winter break is a terrific time to explore and tinker with STEM learning. As with any new web application, please take care to read the terms of use and assist your child with signing up for online tools, keeping safety and digital citizenship in mind. Here are some web-based tools that teach kids how to code:
- Scratch - From the MIT Media Lab, this free and open source program teaches block coding. Kids can make games, stories, and even connect a Makey Makey kit to their creation.
- Made With Code | Google - From the folks at Google, Made With Code, a web-based interface, provides loads of creative project templates and tutorials that are easy to access and learn. The projects appeal to kids' artistic sensibilities, like creating with animation, emojis, and music.
- Thimble by Mozilla - From the makers of Firefox, Thimble is a free and open source editor tool that helps you learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Code.org - Sponsors of the annual Hour of Code, Code.org offers loads of tutorials and learning pathways where kids can create games based on stories and learn the basics of coding.
- MIT App Inventor - From the makers of Scratch at the MIT Media Lab, this open source and web-based tool allows you to program an android-based app. Coming soon is the capability to also create apps for IOS.
- Twine - Twine is an open source, web-based tool that allows you to create and code interactive, non-linear stories.
