Wade King Elementary

JUNE 2020

A Note from the Principal

Dear Wade King Families,

As we enter the last few weeks of our school year, I imagine you have questions about how our year will end. Below, you will find answers to questions about picking up your child's belongings and work, student promotion to the next grade, report cards, and kindergarten registration.

June 18th is our last day of school. You will continue to receive learning menus from your child's teacher on Seesaw with learning engagements through June 18th.

Traditionally, on the last day of school, our students, staff, and families would gather in the cafeteria to reflect on our year, celebrate our 5th graders, and say good-bye for the summer. We wish this is how we could end our year together, but we are not able to because maintaining the health and safety of our community is our top priority. We know this is disappointing, especially for our fifth-grade students who are transitioning to middle school. I want you to know that our staff is working hard to create a 'Last Day of School Celebration' video that we will send to families on the morning of June 18th. It is our hope that everyone in our community will be able to watch that video, knowing we're together in our hearts, even though we can not be together in person.

Be sure to read the articles below because they will likely give you answers to some of the questions you have. I'm sure you also have questions about what next year will look like and want you to know that our district leadership team will be working on that during the summer, following the guidance of OSPI, the CDC, and the Health Department. You can expect to hear from Dr. Baker, and from me, as we have more clarity. Dr. Baker addressed this in his Virtual Conversation yesterday. If you haven't had a chance to listen to it, I encourage you to.

Like always, please connect with me if you have questions or if there is something you need.

With Gratitude,

Stephanie Johnson, Principal

Picking Up Work and Belongings

We want your family to be able to pick up your child's belongings and work from school. We also want you to be able to drop off school library books or books from your child's classroom that you are finished with. We have set up times for this the last week of school, following a protocol that will enable us to maintain physical distancing to keep our community healthy.

Your child's teacher will be in front of the school at the time below. If you come during this time, you will drive up in the carpool loop and stay in your car. Our staff will put a bag for your child on a table and step back. After the staff person steps back, an adult in the car can get out to pick up the bag from the table and get back in your car to drive away.

If you are unable to pick up your child's belongings and work at one of these times, our staff will deliver it to your doorstep on the afternoon of Thursday, June 18th.

Free Food Boxes and School Supplies on Mondays - Spread the Word!

A district priority during the school closure is to provide food for students 18 and younger. Wade King is one of several locations across Bellingham where you can continue to drive up to pick up a box of food between 11am-12:30pm every Monday. We are hoping to continue food pick-up through the summer! Don't hesitate to take advantage of this if it would be a support for your family.

Parent 'Coffee and Conversation'

Stephanie Johnson, Principal, Greg Holmgren, our Assistant Principal, and Jaymie Wakefield, our Counselor, invite you to join us for a virtual ‘Coffee & Conversation’ on Zoom. This is a time for you to connect with us, with other parents, and ask any questions you have. We are stronger together!

Thursday, June 11th at 4pm - Join us using the Zoom link below!

Promotion Information

Many of you have asked about the promotion of your student to the next grade and what will happen at the end of the school year regarding next year. Our district leadership has been working on this, and want you to know that all elementary school students will be promoted to the next year’s grade level following the end of this school year. We continue to expect that, to the extent possible for each student and family, students engage in learning menu activities and stay connected with their teachers through the end of the school year. We look forward to continuing to support learning and connection through Seesaw, and we realize that within this current circumstance of the extended school closure, learning opportunities may be impacted and slowed down. While we do not yet know what the fall will look like, our plan is to be ready to meet your child where they are at in their learning and help them thrive! Please continue to take part in the learning menu activities posted by your child’s teachers and other learning that you are doing in your homes.

June Report Cards

We have also made decisions about June report cards for elementary students that we want to share with you. As we considered options for reporting student progress for the end-of-year report card, our leadership team decided that we did not have a valid measurement of progress since we have not seen students in person since March. Therefore, report cards for spring 2020 will be marked with a designation of passing and all students will be promoted to the next grade level. Where we normally designate 4, 3, 2, 1 scores for each standard, the boxes will be intentionally left blank for the second semester. Since the spring report card does not have new information about student performance, families will not receive a hard copy in the mail this summer. Report cards will be posted in Skyward Family Access on June 18th, in the Portfolio section, along with previous report cards, test scores and other documents.
Big picture

Welcome New Kindergarteners

This week, we had planned to have a Kindergarten Open House to welcome kindergarteners who will be coming to Wade King in the fall. Because we weren't able to be together, we have created a video to give our new friends a virtual introduction to our amazing school and a chance to meet our kindergarten teachers. You'll see that Mrs. Niva is moving to kindergarten and Mrs. Russell is moving up to first grade! If you have a child who will be entering kindergarten in the fall, the video below is for you! If you have a neighbor who will be in kindergarten or know a child who will be in kindergarten, please share this with their family. There is information about kindergarten registration on our school web site as well. If you have questions about kindergarten, don't hesitate to email our principal, Mrs. Johnson.

A Message from School Counselor, Mrs. Wakefield

One of the best parts of my job is connecting with students and families and being a thought partner as needs arise. As we move into the summer, especially after spending the last three months at home, you're likely hearing your children saying they are bored. The article below may give you some ideas the next time you hear those words!

If there is anything else that I might be able to help with, please connect with me. I would also love to provide support or be a thought partner. You can reach me on my new cell phone at (360)746-5319... call or text... You can also email me.

Virtual Talent Show

If you haven't yet had a chance to watch our virtual Talent Show, be sure to check it out using this link. The kids and adults in our community have some pretty amazing talent!
