Dear Martin by author Nic Stone
This Week's BOTW is Dear Martin by author Nic Stone. Justyce McAllister is a good kid, an honor student, and always there to help a friend--but none of that matters to the police officer who just put him in handcuffs. Despite leaving his rough neighborhood behind, he can't escape the scorn of his former peers or the ridicule of his new classmates. Justyce looks to the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for answers. But do they hold up anymore? He starts a journal to Dr. King to find out.
Respiratory Infections Are Increasing In MCPS
There has been a significant increase in respiratory infections within our community which is impacting students, staff, and families. Montgomery County and the state of Maryland have experienced a substantial increase in respiratory virus illnesses (including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV) resulting in outpatient visits and hospitalizations.
Viruses and other germs can live on surfaces:
- You can become infected when you touch surfaces and then touch your eyes, nose, mouth, or other mucous membranes.
- Many viruses can also spread through the air.
- A person can exhale small particles while talking, sneezing, singing, or coughing and, you could breathe in particles and become infected.
Reduce the spread of airborne viruses in schools:
1. Help your body fight germs (get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, get regular physical exercise).
2. Remain home when sick.
3. Reduce close contact with people who are sick.
4. Improve indoor ventilation; use portable air purifiers.
5. Wear a mask when getting over an illness.
6. Stay up to date with vaccines.
7. And of course, encourage and practice thorough handwashing and cough etiquette.
