AHS Principal's Newsletter

March 7, 2022

Dear AHS Families,

Spring is near! We are on the verge of a season of excitement at AHS. Although March can feel like a long month, it's also one that is full of activity at AHS. We have started the course registration process for the 22-23 school year, we'll begin MCAS testing, spring sports are starting up, and many student groups are planning for events - the musical, prom, the arts show, and so much more! So yes, March is long, but from here it flies.

Since returning from the February break, students and staff seem regenerated and ready for this second act. I look forward to all of the smiles (that I can finally see!) and all of the special moments on the horizon!

With gratitude,

Principal's Coffee Hour

Guidance Department Updates

Students are now beginning course registration for the 22-23 school year! Teachers are making recommendation for core classes, then the Aspen portal will open for students to select their electives and alternatives. Counselors will be holding meetings with students during advisory, then 1:1 follow ups in April before the vacation. Don't forget to review the Program of Studies with your child.

The Amesbury Guidance department has launched an Instagram where they're sharing important SEL resources and other guidance related information. Follow them @amsby_guidance

Stressed and anxious? Ms. Sullivan, one of our school adjustment counselors, is offering an art-based anxiety management group for third quarter. The group is offered on Tuesdays during 1st lunch and Thursdays during 2nd lunch in the Bank Room. Bring your lunch and leave behind your stress.

WIN Workshops

The Partnership of Amesbury Community and Teens (PACT) will be launching workshops during WIN Block. Students can sign up to attend these sessions with community volunteers. They're geared toward the student interest of building life skills and other "adulting" skills. Students can sign up using this Google Form. Check out the offerings below!

COVID Updates

As a reminder, the School Committee followed Superintendent McAndrews’ recommendation and unanimously voted to go mask optional at Amesbury High School. This went into effect on 2/16/22.

Please note that masks will continue to be required in our health office, and for students returning from a positive COVID case during days 6-10. The new DESE policy strongly recommends that unvaccinated individuals continue to wear masks.

Above all, it is important to remember that AHS is now mask optional. Barring the situations described above, masking will be an individual choice, and it is my expectation that those individual choices - to mask or not - are supported throughout our building by both staff and students.

As a reminder, students/families can still opt into our at-home testing program. You can read more about the program and complete a form to opt in here. We will also be continuing with symptomatic testing in our nursing office for both students and staff.

If you have any other questions, please contact our school nurse, Ms. Liz Shorter (elisabeth.shorter@amesburyma.org).
