The Principal's Desk At Sycamore
February 29, 2020
Dr. Crystal Cooper, Principal
Sycamore Parents,
As we close our month of love, I hope that you were able to have many opportunities to feel and show love this month with your family, children and community. We certainly had a busy month learning and growing and we look forward to bringing in March in a strong way. It's hard to believe that we have only 3 months left of school? We are on our way!
Literacy Palooza is on Monday!
Our annual Literacy Palooza will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM. All of our students and staff will be dressed up to connect to a reading book of choice. We can't wait to see you in our school! Pastor Chuck from Sugar Hill Church will be here with his dog Kirby to help us with our day and give us a special gift! Also, we will celebrate two students from each grade level who have shown exemplary reading progress this school year! We can't wait to celebrate with you and also celebrate the power that is given with being equipped with reading literacy! Reading takes you places!!
Class Placements for Next Year:
This week, you will receive a colored document that will allow you to detail any requests for next year 2020-2021. All requests for teachers can't be promised, but we will try our best. These will be due no later than March 20th, so please make sure that you complete these prior to this date. As always, we will have classes confirmed in July and won't release any class lists until our Open House, which will be held on Friday, July 31st. So much can change between now and next school year, so we want to make sure we aren't premature in our class list delivery.
Andriux Zapata update:
I was able to visit Andirux and his mom last Wednesday and he was a joy to visit. He gets his treatments every 4-5 days and is going strong. I am also happy to report that after his first chemo treatment, that the mass has shrunk significantly! We are overjoyed and hope that it will continue to move out of his body! He still has a long road ahead and will have to visit CHOA for the next 3 years to make sure that he is getting all the support he will need. However, as he continues to require treatment, more support will be needed. We have discussed fundraisers and future support with mom and we have some fun things in the works to garner some support for this family, so stay tuned.

What is i-Ready? K-5 Student Learning Website that WORKS!
- i-Ready is an online program for reading and/or mathematics that will help your child’s teacher(s) determine your child’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows your teacher(s) to meet your child exactly where they are and provides data to increase your child’s learning gains. i-Ready consists of two parts: Diagnostic and Instruction.
- The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade, but instead to determine how best to support your child’s learning.
- i-Ready Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your child can learn at a pace that is just right for them. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your child engaged as they learn.

School Communication-Changes
We miss this feature, as it was a great way to communicate with parents and our community. However, we hope to keep you informed on our website, Principal's Desk, and social media pages.
We have received approval to utilize Class Dojo, so you will be getting correspondence from your child's teacher if they use this format for communication.

Friendly Reminders
- All visitors will be asked at the door who they are and their reason for entering the building by our front desk clerk. Always have your ID ready to show every time. Vanessa Camacho-Chapparo is our new front desk clerk and is happy to join our team. Please be patient with our new district requirement that ensures a stronger and safe environment for our school community.
- We will begin our morning announcements at 8:45 AM daily and ask that all car riders are in their seats ready to begin their day prior to 8:45 AM.
- We are going to use Mypaymentsplus for all of our monetary transactions besides small fundraisers throughout the year. Please make sure that you sign up for this with the information below.
- We are infusing social emotional learning with our PBIS discipline program. Every classroom will have morning meeting daily where they will greet one another, share something based on a focused topic, engage in an activity and end with a morning message. This 10 minute activity every day ties to our AKS, but also helps to start the day off positively. Ask your child about the amazing experience.
