The Goshen Gazette
December 2022
From the principal - Mr. Graves
Ever witnessed a student accomplishing what the world said he or she could not, like a bumble bee taking flight? With encouragement, some young people take flight despite the challenges they face. In the middle of the word encouragement stands the word courage. When we encourage young people, we literally pour courage in them, prompting some heartfelt action toward their fuller potential, helping them fly even when odds are staked against them. To encourage means to hearten, embolden, inspire, advocate, and enliven. Encouragement is a gift we give our students, an act of generosity. And when we encourage them, we ourselves are heartened.
Every day here at school the Goshen staff work hard to help and encourage our students to become better readers, writers, mathematicians and scientist. We also work each day to help our students become overall good people. As we go through this holiday season, consider joining us in encouraging all of our students to work every day to be and to do their very best at everything they try.
Here are some ways to encourage your student:
- Before winter break, visit the library to stock up on reading material. Encourage your youngster to set a goal and check out that many books. Be sure to get a few books for yourself—your child will see that reading is a lifelong pleasure.
- Use shapes to practice basic math facts and geometry at the same time. Take turns asking each other questions like “How many sides does a pentagon and an octagon have?” (5 + 8 = 3) or “How many vertices are there in three triangles?” (3 x 3 = 9).
- Make up sing-able Mad Libs. Have everyone write the lyrics to different songs and leave blanks for some of the words. Under each blank, tell what type of word should go there (say, a noun that rhymes with ‘you’). Then, sing the new songs!
- If you travel to another town, invite your child to compare your destination with the place where you live. There might be more open spaces or taller buildings in the new place. Or your youngster might point out geographic features like mountains or plains.
- Cut back on your child’s screen time by gradually replacing a screen habit with a different activity. While waiting at the dentist, play I Spy rather than a game on a cell phone. Instead of watching TV after dinner, play a card game or do a craft together.
To all of our Goshen Lane families, "thank you" for your support this first half of the school year. I wish you all a safe, enjoyable holiday season, and look forward to working with you and your student in 2023!
