First Week of School
Dear Sorrick Families,
Thank you for joining us this past week at our drive-thru material pickup and virtual orientation night! We had a fantastic turnout and we enjoyed seeing our students so eager to begin the school year. If you missed the orientation night event, you still have the opportunity to view the school presentation and teacher presentations at your convenience. As we begin school this week, whether your child is attending in person or remotely, there are several important reminders to be aware of. Please read below for these essential updates.
Monday, August 24th - First day of school for Kindergarten & First Grade
Wednesday, August 26th - First day of school for Pre-Kindergarten
In-Person Learners
Arrival
Our arrival times are staggered for car riders (walkers) and bus riders. Please be aware of these times. If your child arrives late, he/she will need to be signed in at the front office and will be marked tardy.
AM Arrival
- Car Riders/Walkers: 9:30-9:45 AM
- Buses unload: 9:45-10:00 AM
Mid-day Arrival
- Car Riders/Walkers: 12:45 AM - 1:00 PM
- Buses unload: 1:00 - 1:15 PM
Please note that car riders/walkers in Pre-K or Kindergarten will need to enter at door 5 and first grade car riders/walkers will enter at door 6. If you have a child in multiple grade levels, please drop your younger students off at door 5 first before proceeding to door 6.
Blue Signs
If your child is a car rider, proceed to the back of the building via Bill Dunnett Parkway shortly before arrival and dismissal. Once your car passes the white painted line, you will be able to park and exit your vehicle. Please walk up to the sidewalk by door 5 (for a child in pre-k or kindergarten) or door 6 (for a child in first grade) and stand on a spray painted marker spaced 6 feet from others. As you approach the door, please be holding your blue sign so that the staff member at the door can see the name of your child. Once your child is released from the classroom, the staff member will send the child out the door to meet you.
Please maintain social distancing and wear a mask during arrival and dismissal. We appreciate your cooperation.
Health Screening Forms
DO NOT send your child to school with a "yes" marked on the form. A "yes" marked on the form indicates that your child is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or has been in contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19. Should your child arrive to school with a "yes" marked on the form, he/she will be isolated from the general population and you will be contacted to pick up your child immediately.
If your child arrives to the car rider/walker door without a form in hand, you will be asked to take your child home to complete the health screening. Upon returning to school, you can sign your child into the main office at door 1. We understand this is an inconvenience, but it is crucial that your child is screened at home on a daily basis before arriving. Please remember that the health and safety of your child, the children of others and our staff depend on our strict adherence to this policy.
Masks
We understand that this is a new experience for our young students. We will spend time teaching about the importance of mask wearing and the proper way to wear a mask to reinforce this with our students. If your child struggles with this at home, please continue to practice with him/her. Seeing adults modeling the wearing of masks and purchasing masks with fun designs are great ways to build your child's interest.

Dismissal
Mid-day dismissal:
- Car riders/walkers: 11:45 AM - 12:00 PM
- Buses board: 12:00 PM - 12:15 PM
End-of-day dismissal:
- Car riders/walkers: 3:00 - 3:15 PM
- Buses board: 3:15 - 3:30 PM
Your patience is appreciated during the first week of school as we get our students comfortable with arrival and dismissal. Please note that it may take longer than expected for your child to dismiss. Once the routine is well established, dismissal should run much more efficiently.
Remote Learners
Live Stream Expectations for Remote Learners
Remote students will be receiving a schedule from their teacher that illustrates a typical day in the classroom. The synchronous (live) times that are listed on the schedule are REQUIRED. Students must use Google Meet during the synchronous times to participate in live classroom instruction. Any student that is not signed into the Google Meet will be marked Absent. Remote students are expected to turn on their cameras during instruction, follow the rules and procedures outlined in the Parent-Student Handbook, and abide by these virtual expectations. Students who do not adhere to these guidelines will be subject to the District’s discipline policies.
When your child’s classroom teacher is absent, you may receive a notification that his/her synchronous (live) learning has been cancelled for the day. If this occurs, the teacher will assign learning activities that should be completed before the next day. If you have not already done so, please review this communication regarding the provision and recording of in-person and remote educational services.
If you have questions or need additional assistance preparing your child for the first day of school, our technology instruction coordinators and team leaders will be available during parent orientation. During orientation, your child’s teacher will be able to direct you to this technology support.
First Day for Kindergarten Remote Learners
All parents of kindergarten remote learners should have received an email from our Director of Curriculum, Mrs. Droba. In this email, you will see some welcome back and introductory activities that your child can begin working on at the start of his/her school day.
Because there are a lot of new skills that our remote students have to practice, your child’s first live session will take place with a teacher leader or technology instruction coordinator. This instructor will help your child understand how he or she can be a successful remote learner. This email will include a link to access a live session with this teacher leader or technology instruction coordinator and the time of his/her live session. This session is an important first step in helping your child become comfortable navigating remote learning.
Please note that this schedule only pertains to the first day of school for kindergarten students (Monday, August 24th). After Monday, please refer to your child's teacher's schedule for specific assignments and scheduled times for live streaming sessions.
