Gradebook
Now that we have passed the midpoint of third quarter, please review and reflect on your gradebook. Even though we have technically been in school for 5 weeks now... it really ended up being only 4 weeks due to emergency days. That said, you should have at least 8 formatives and at least one, if not two, summative grades entered for each course. Remember, no student's grade should be defined by only one summative assessment with no hope of recovering. Many teachers have far more than the minimum, some are on target... it truely depends on the structure of your class and subject area, the various units you have your students involved in, and how your department defines formative and summative. Please refer to the 2018-19 Faculty Handbook, pages 17-19 for a more deteiled description of formatives & summatives as well as our school's general guidelines on grade input.
Please ask yourself a few things while reviewing your gradebook...
- Have I given my students ample practice on material (formative work) leading up to a culminating assessment (summative)?
- Have I provided my students with clear feedback on formatives to ensure that identified struggles can be addressed?
- Do the grades & feedback I provide students on formative work measure complience or understanding? How does it help students?
- Have I reviewed the results of summatives to identify if any students may need additional remediation in order to successfully master the material?
There are many facets of becoming a reflective teacher beyond what has been stated here and being a reflective teacher does take time, but it can prove to make a world of difference in how effective you are in delivering the material and engage your students. Thank you for continuing to focus on what is best for our students.
Late Start
This past Tuesday's late start began in the cafeteria with a review of the upcoming changes to the 2019-20 Curriculum. As the meeting transitioned to the individual PLCs, I was able to step into several team meetings and either listen to what is being worked on or engage in converstations and clarification of the important work youa re doing with your Year Long Plans and UBDs. Administration will continue to be at your disposal to work with you at any level you deem necessary to support you in your work. Please reach out to us and arrange a time!
Returning student registration has begun!
Guidance has begun meeting with freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in order to plan out their 2019-20 classes. Thanks to Mrs. Littner and Mrs. Hilton and their Student Mentors who stepped into the extended homerooms on Thursday to help students understand the process and how to decide what courses to take.
Guidance will continue to meet with these students through the month of February. If you receive a request for a student to be pulled out of your class, please know that you have full discretion as to whether the student is able to or not. Guidance respects your classroom environment and will, if necesary, determine another period for that student.
Hopefully all returning students will have met with a counselor by the end of the month. Thank you for your flexibility in this process!
MVP pitches pique interest of Community Board Members!
Student teams from the IDEA class pitched their product/service in front of a 3 person Community Panel Thursday morning with the sole purpose of receiving funding to continue progress on their product/service. Students presented on marketing, finance, development, and how receiving this funding will help their company move forward in further developing their product/service. Student teams dressed and presented professionally and respectfully as they mingled with community members, mentors, and school administration. Thank you to Mr. Knutson for arranging a great event. Mark your calendars for the Final Pitch Night, May 9, 2019 when the companies finalize their pitches in hopes of launching their business! All are welcomed!
Other events that occurred this past week include...
- The Chess headed to state this weekend in hopes of another great showing!
- The Wrestling team is competing in Sectionals this weekend... and as of Saturday six of our wrestlers made it to the semi-finals!
- The 23 students who are currently attending the MUN Conference in Chicago have been busy representing Tanzania as they take on roles on various committees within a model United Nations structure.
- The Academic Challenge Team made a strong showing, with the following individual awards...
Jamie Atedero 1st in English, Joseph Noonan 1st in physics & 3rd in Math, Mackenzie Schwalbach 3rd in Physics, Connor Blaz 3rd in English
Overall, Marian continues to make an impact in and outside of our Marian community!
Looking ahead...
Well, if it is not the weather interrupting our schedule, sometimes we have heavy weeks of retreats... and this week is one of those weeks! This week we will have several the sophomores, juniors and seniors involved in day retreats.
Monday: Sophomore girls
Tuesday: Sophomore boys
Thursday: Seniors
Friday Juniors
Remember, because there are several options throughout the year for each of these grade levels, not all of your students will be attending. Please review the attached listing above. Retreats are excused absences and students are allowed one day to make up for every day absent. Please also make sure that for both yours and the students' clarity in the gradebook, that you use the annotation of rt as well as the zero in the gradebook to indicate that although they have yet to turn the assignment, they will receie full credit once received (within above mentioned timeframe). The clearer you are with gradebook entries and annotations, the less miscommunication there is. Thank you.
Since the weather interrupted our Catholic Schools Week, this Monday administration, in conjuction with the cafeteria, will be providing every student with a "sweet treat" during all lunches! We are looking forward to thanking students for their commitment to our Catholic Schools!
There are a variety of Spring Sports meetings going on this week... as teams start to plan out their season. Let's pray that the weather gives us a break as we look forward to seeing our students participate outside soon!
In addition, students involved in this weekend's musical, Seussical The Musical have been feverishly preparing for this coming week... considered "tech week," the week leading into the production. During this time you will see very anxious and frazzled students as they juggle last minute run-throughs and rehearsals to make sure that everything from lighting, to sound, to music, dance, and performance are all just right! Please support them in this week with words of encouragement. A little goes a long way! And remember... the best support is coming to see them perform! Check out the details below and come out and see the show!
Have a wonderful week...
