Reading Celebration!
Math Workshop
We used pattern blocks to play two games: Pattern Block puzzles, and "Fill A Hexagon". In each game, the Maples used pattern blocks to create various images. Games such as these highlight the distinguishing, similar, and differentiating characteristics of shapes such as a diamond, a hexagon, and a pentagon.
We also played a game called Build It, in which a number is shown on a flash card and the players have to show a visual representation of that number on a ten frame. It was a huge hit! This game introduces a "ten frame" an important concept of early number sense. By using a ten frame, students visualize and conceptualize early addition facts (3 on the top row and 2 on the bottom equals 5 all together, as does 4 on the top row and 1 on the bottom).
