TIGER TALES

The Voice of Raleigh Park - October 1, 2018

Our knowledge and experiences inspire action that supports community needs.

Hello October!

Hello Tigers!

A sincere thank you to all who came to our Back to School Night. It is only in partnership with you that we are able to make the most significant strides on behalf of your children.

We have a BIG week ahead, culminated on Friday with the 2018 Jog-a-Thon. We kicked off Jog-a-Thon season with an assembly on September 20, where we welcomed our special guests and world-class runners, Emily Pritt and Colleen Quigley, who provided our young runners with some great advice about how to best prepare for the big day. I also had the opportunity to reinforce expectations of safety and how we positively represent our school within the community as we solicit pledges; specifically, only going to homes of family, friends and neighbors we know.

Related to Jog-a-Thon, and the many enrichment programs/opportunities Raleigh Park is able to offer, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Many of you have heard me speak of the "Three T's" of stewardship: time, talent and treasure. While the issue of money often overshadows the comprehensive needs of our school, your time and talent are no less important. Over the next couple of years, Raleigh Park will lose some significant benefactors of time, making it essential that others fill the void. In more direct terms: if we don't have champions of these enrichment programs/opportunities, they simply do not happen.

If you've ever pondered about how you can contribute with your time and/or talent, please contact our PTO about the many opportunities to make a difference in our school community.

My best,

Brian

Fall Garden Clean-up: October 6

Rain or shine, bring the entire family to the Raleigh Park garden clean-up! We will meet Saturday, October 6, 1:00 - 3:00. No experience or garden tools necessary; just show up and join in as we prepare the garden for winter. Whether you come for 30 minutes or stay the whole time, it’s a great opportunity to help our school and get to know other RP families.

The Raleigh Park Garden is an amazing addition to our school that contributes to our students' learning environment. The RP Garden provides our students an opportunity to connect with the natural world, to get their hands dirty and learn to appreciate the importance of eating fresh foods.

Chaperones & Volunteers

If you have not done so already, please reference the Beaverton School District's Volunteerism & Community Engagement resources. This is especially important if you plan to volunteer your time during the school day, during school events and/or chaperone field trips. Regardless if you've volunteered in the past, please do not assume you have completed and passed the background check process. Feel free to confirm with our volunteer coordinators, Amy Prewett and Kristine Morescalchi.

Some points of note:

  • The Beaverton School District does not honor background checks through/from other agencies
  • Please allow approximately (2) weeks prior to clearing the background check
  • Parents and community members who have not cleared the background check process will not be allowed to chaperone field trips or volunteer at school

While this principal never likes telling an enthusiastic volunteer/chaperone "no", these expectations are non-negotiable and in service of the safety of our students.

Our Younger Learners

As children develop strength and fine motor skills that come naturally with age, we (adults) sometimes take for granted the tasks and skills that are difficult for our younger children. Specific to parents of students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, two ways you can help us are by:

  1. practicing shoe-tying
  2. sending pre-packaged lunch items that are easy to open.

We would like to avoid the potentially dangerous trips and falls that result when energetic and enthusiastic learners are mixed with loose shoelaces. Meanwhile, there never seem to be enough adult hands for all of the wonderfully delicious, yet difficult to open packages that come from home. Your support is ALWAYS appreciated!

TAG

Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office. Completing this form gives our school TAG committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of its completion.

Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.

The Parent Information Form must be completed and returned to our school’s TAG facilitator, Mrs. Laird, after which we will evaluate the students nominated by parents or teachers in the month of November.

###

The Beaverton School District staff and community are invited to assist with the selection of the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 District calendars by selecting their preferred calendar option for each of the two years. The survey will be open through October 14, 2018. The final calendars will be announced and posted on the District’s website following the October 22, 2018 School Board meeting. Key differences are outlined below.

The calendar committee, comprised of parents, association leadership, school administrators and central administrators, considered the following factors when developing the various calendar options:

  • Contractual requirements: District calendars must include 184 student days, 198 licensed employee days, 5 paid holidays (Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Presidents Day and Memorial Day), 3 August pre-service days, 2 August professional development days and 4 grading days.

  • Instructional and historical considerations: Calendar committees typically try to distribute semesters as evenly as possible, place grading days on Mondays or Fridays for parent convenience and provide as many full weeks of school as possible. Winter break has historically been ten days and spring break follows the Oregon University System (OUS) calendar.

  • Starting before/after Labor Day: Over the past three years, an additional nine instructional days have been added to the calendar. Adding these days to the beginning of the year are considered more instructionally consequential for students, prompting school to begin before Labor Day in 2018 rather than going later in June.
