Room Cleaning this Summer -
THIS Friday WILL BE THE end of the six weeks. Please make sure your grades are perfect as of 8:00 am TUESDAY, MAY 8. At that time, we will be sending out a reminder to parents to check grades.
Finals - you need to give one.
1. It will be used to provide you with feedback on your student's mastery of TEKS in your class.
2. It is 20% of their semester grade.
3. It is used as an attendance incentive.
4. It gives students a reason to come to school and attendance = money.
5. It makes the last three weeks of school meaningful when they know they are going to be assessed on what they are learning.
YOU WILL NEED TO TURN IN A FINAL EXAM FOR YOUR CLASSES TO MRS. HUERTA WHEN YOU MEET WITH HER FOR YOUR END OF YEAR CHECKOUT. YOU WILL ALSO NEED TO GIVE HER DOCUMENTATION THAT YOU HAVE CONTACTED ALL PARENTS OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE FAILED YOUR CLASS. EXPECT A FORMAL REACTION IF YOU DO NOT PROVIDE THESE DOCUMENTS.
No subs on final exam days. These are Red-X days and you will not get paid for them if you miss.
Blue and Gold Ceremony - department heads and those giving senior awards should plan on attending.

Summer Exchange Days, 2018
You must attend and work on these specific days, with the guidance of a facilitator, to earn these hours. This is not something you can get credit for doing at home.
Here are your 2 choices:
June 13 and 14 and July 24 and 25
If you can only make 1 day in June and one in July, that works, too. Please let me know if you will be attending so I can add you to the rosters in Eduphoria.
Talent Show Details -
End of Year Student Surveys
Please encourage your student to give you feedback. If you wish to make your own tool or have suggestions for changing or adding questions from the middle of year assessment, please let me know.
I will have these available for you to post in your classroom during the last week of school.
This Week is GenTx Day 2018 - get on board!
GenTx Day is on Friday, May 4. What is GenTx Day?
Well, I'm glad you asked.
On GenTX Day, all students are recognized for their postsecondary plans in front of the entire study body. Think of GenTX Decision Day as a school spirit day, during which we all work together to build excitement and awareness surrounding the college selection and enrollment process.
We will also use this day to help transition the 8th graders to the high school.
If you want to incorporate this into an opportunity to talk about post-high school plans with your students, that would be great. At the very least, we definitely want everyone dressed in their favorite college gear on this day.
Here's the big-picture agenda:
9:30 - 8th grade students arrive at LVHS, greeted by cheerleaders and our Project Vinatta team, broken into groups and given tours of the school.
They return to the gym by 10:30, at which time, the cheer leaders prep them on our schoolwide spirit stick cheer, fight song, and school song and give them their welcome gift (TBD).
10:45 - High school students are released to gym for assembly.
10:50 - 11:15 - GenTx Ceremony
Increasing supervision this last few weeks...
Make sure you are in the hallways.
Make sure you are at your duty post on time.
Make sure you are aware, proactive, and responsive.
Especially these last few weeks. Thanks!

Final Exam Exemptions!
Attendance Criteria:
Perfect Attendance during the second semester in ALL YOUR CLASSES: EXEMPT 3 FINALS.
NO MORE THAN 1 DAY ABSENT TOTAL in the second semester: EXEMPT 2 FINALS.
NO MORE THAN 2 DAYS ABSENT TOTAL in the second semester: EXEMPT 1 FINAL.
A student who has missed more than 6 absences per period in any class for the year may not be eligible to exempt ANY exams.
Grade Criteria: At least an 80% semester average and an 75% final (yearly) average in the class the student is exempting.
Guidelines:
· Exempting a final exam does not entitle a student to be absent on the day or period of the final. Students must still attend classes, regardless of exemptions earned. Students absent during finals will lose their exemptions in accordance with the above exemption criteria.
· For the sake of exemptions, any attendance disputes must be addressed and resolved with the attendance clerk within 3 school days of the absence or tardy.
· If you fail to meet the attendance eligibility requirements because of additional absences, you will receive an Incomplete in the course you requested to exempt. You will have 10 school days to come in and take the missed exam before a zero is recorded in its place.
The following absences do not affect exemption status:
1. Medical appointments which are documented with a doctor’s note furnished to the attendance office upon return to school.
2. Funeral for immediate family members up to 3 days.
3. School functions.
4. Religious holidays.
5. Military deployment of an immediate family member.
6. Required court dates.
7. College days (up to 2 per year).
Students in grades 9 and 10 may be eligible for semester exam exemptions if ALL of these criteria are met:
Freshmen - pass all 3 STAAR tests - exempt final exam in one of those classes (Algebra, Biology OR English 1)). For each STAAR test you get commended on, you get to exempt the final exam in that class.
English 2 - pass STAAR - exempt final in English 2. Commended on English 2 STAAR, exempt final in one other class in addition to English 2.
You must have at least a 75% average in a class in order to be eligible to exempt the final.
You must have teacher permission to exempt the final in their class.
You are encouraged to take the final in the class you exempt. If your grade on the final raises your average, it will be used to calculate your semester average.

Keeping this in here on purpose!
- Make sure students take a hall pass when they leave class. If you need more, let them office know.
- Be in the hallways during passing period.
- Be at your duty station on time and be diligent.
- Send students to the front office if they want to go to their car during the school day - we have a system.
- Start class with a student-centered activity and teach bell-to-bell. (Idle hands and all.)
- Don't leave students unsupervised. If something happens under your care, you will be held responsible. This includes during lunch time - don't leave students in your room alone.
- Enforce the dress code/Don't let students use their phones in class. It takes all of us consistently enforcing it to make it a schoolwide expectation.
School safety - our top priority
- Keep your classroom door locked.
- Always make sure visitors have a badge. If not, alert the front office immediately. Ask the visitor to go get checked in.
- Never prop open doors, including the outside doors.
- Encourage students to share concerns about other students - using SafeAlert (you should have an info poster in your room) or by confiding in an adult.
- Take concerns and threats seriously - contact the office if concerns arise.
- Be in the hallways during passing periods.
- Don't be afraid to be a little paranoid - alert the office if you have a concern ASAP.
iPad use...it's just for academics during instructional time.
Thanks!
first 15, last 15 minutes of class are a no fly zone. don't allow students to leave your class during these times. first 5, last 5 during advisory.

If you have students with accommodations, read this:
If a student has 'oral admin' as a testing accommodation, you must send them to a small group to receive this accommodation. They can not refuse to use it. If it's in there, we are required to provide it for them. No ifs, and, or buts.
Canvas - assignments
grades are to be updated every weekend in Canvas (TxConnect for progress reports only). i check on tuesdays. if you haven't updated within 4 days, you will receive a written reminder.
Reminder of minimum number of assignments per category:
• Daily = 20% - minimum of 6 required per 9 weeks
• Formative Assessment = 35% - minimum of 3 required per 9 weeks

Advisory changes:
Hosting a club or UIL event?
Newbies be sure to read (veterans review):
- Make sure you are in the hallways during passing periods.
- Make sure your door stays locked during the school day.
- No cell phones in classes - not even homeroom. Especially not during homeroom. They can study, read, or something else academic or productive. Cell phones are OK during passing periods, in the hallways, and at lunch.
- Leave attendance rosters for your subs when you are out and plenty of work to utilize the 90 minutes you are gone. This should not be a missed instructional day for your students.
- Remember that grades get posted in Canvas. The only assignment you should have in TxConnect should be the student's weekly average from Canvas. This should be entered in the one assignment you create in your gradebook, called "Current Average - See Canvas for Assignment Details". This should be updated over the weekend/Mondays, every weekend/Mondays.
