Welcome to the 2018-2019 Lower Mills School Year!
Our Welcome Back to School Team included our new Pastor, Father Jack Ahern!
We are blessed to have Father Jack Ahern as our new Pastor of Saint Gregory's Parish. We will celebrate our monthly Mass and Holy Days of Obligation with Father Jack. Father Jack has a rich history in the City of Boston and has served as the Pastor of many of churches in Dorchester, Roxbury, Brookline, and Randolph. He is known to all as a community Priest who cares deeply about Catholic Education and supporting all-community safety, people experiencing homelessness, food pantries, community partnerships, and much more! Father Jack is deeply respected amongst his Brothers and the community. Please join us at Mass to welcome Father Jack!

Our Early Childhood Program continues to outperform their peers on Readiness Testing in other sectors. As a proud partner of The Lynch Foundation Early Childhood Project, our teachers receive onsite coaching and continue to strengthen their instructional and social-emotional practices. Our classrooms are outfitted with the strongest developmental materials for ages 2.9 to K2, providing our students the best opportunities. Early Childhood teachers and Principals have also completed a two-year training on Trauma Sensitive practices in school settings.
We are proud to share that for the 3rd consecutive year, ALL Early Childhood classrooms at Lower Mills are at a wait list status!

Lower Mills was ranked the highest of all four SJP2CA Campuses in both GROWTH AND ACHIEVEMENT!
We have been busy reviewing lots of data this summer! Our standardized testing shows that we are above the norm in all content areas: Math, Reading, and Language. Our MAP testing highlights that students at the Lower Mills Campus showed High Growth AND High Achievement in all three quadrants as well...Math, Reading, and Language! This is a HUGE celebration and a testament to OUR work together. This cannot happen without the perserversance of students, rigorous instruction and carefully scaffolded lessons from teachers, and of course the support and love from our families.
We are not done YET, we will continue this strong sense of growth and urgency!
Our September MAP testing begins this week!

How can I support my child at home to best prepare for the MAP test? Great questions!
Here are a few suggestions:
- Talk about what it means to do your best on MAP...there is no studying needed the night before! Students should come to school, ready to try their best and give 100%. Remaining focused on the question that is being asked, using test-taking strategies, asking for breaks as needed, using scrap paper provided to think through questions, and to take their time!
- Talk with your child about individual and personalized goals they have set for themselves and with their teacher.
- Make sure your child has a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast the day of MAP testing. It is always best to have your child at school on time, but it is extremely important during testing. It is diifuclt for students to enter the classroom space late when their classmates have already started the testing.

Lower Mills Innovative Educator Spotlight
Ms. Kathryn Bois
Ms. Kathryn Bois joins the Lower Mills school community as our first ever Assistant Principal! She worked as a middle and high school ELA teacher at Archbishop Williams High School the past three years. Ms. Bois is a proud graduate of St. Joseph's College in Maine, where she graduated Valedictorian! She continued her education at Boston College as part of the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps, where she taught at St. Mary of the Hills in Milton. Ms. Bois graduated with her Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. Ms. Bois was also the Varsity tennis and field hockey coach at AWHS! As if she is not busy enough, Ms. Bois is in mid-wedding planning mode! She will be getting married next summer to her fiancé, Cameron. Ms. Bois' office looks like a picture out of a magazine...everything has a place and is neatly organized and color coded. Ms. Bois loves ice cream, however, you will see her with a healthy lunch packed every morning. Her hobbies include skiing and hiking in her home state of Maine. Fun fact about Ms. Bois, her mom has been an elementary school teacher for over 30 years at the same school in her hometown. Ms. Bois has a 23 year old brother, Kevin, who works as a mechanical engineer for an aerospace company. Ms. Bois is excited to be back in a school with Early Childhood, Primary, and Middle School...she loves watching the growth of students!
