God of hospitality, who welcomed all, help us to be accepting and open to all whom we meet. May we live out Mary MacKillop’s words, “Never see a need without doing something about it”, and be willing to help all those in need.
Provider God, you gave us Mary MacKillop. She spent her life loving you and bringing your love to the poor children in Australia. She still works on through her Sisters of Joseph and their Associates.
We thank you God and pray that you will bless us so that we can follow her example.
We ask this in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen
Dear Parents and Staff
Yesterday, 8 August, was the Feast day of our first, and only, Australian Saint, Mary MacKillop, the daughter of Scottish migrant parents, who was born in Melbourne in 1842. At 16 years of age Mary moved to Penola in South Australia to work as a governess on her uncle’s farm. Here she met Fr Julian Tenison Woods who shared her dream of educating the poor. In 1866 Mary, along with Fr Woods opened the first free Catholic school in Penola. The following year, at 25 years of age, Mary established the Sisters of St Joseph, the first Catholic order founded by an Australian. The mission of the order was to teach the poor and within three years there were 70 Sisters in the order educating children at 21 schools in Adelaide and country South Australia. In 1871 Mary was excommunicated after disagreements with Bishop Sheil on the grounds that “she had incited the Sisters to disobedience and defiance”. In 1872 Mary was completely exonerated and the Order continued to grow under Mary’s leadership, expanding to over forty schools in and around Adelaide, with many also in Queensland and New South Wales. In 1883 the Order established schools in New Zealand and Victoria in 1889. In her later life Mary’s health deteriorated and she was left paralysed on her right side. She remained leader of the Order until her death on 8 August 1909.
Mary was Beatified by Pope John Paul II on 19 January 1995 and on 17 October 2010 was declared a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI, being now known as St Mary of the Cross.
Mary was a remarkable woman who remains an inspiration to us all.
"Let us try to keep God with us by charity of thought, word and act."

PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL
Congratulations to our Year Three children who represented our school so well yesterday in the Primary Sacred Choral Music section of the festival. The adjudicator’s comment that “this was sung with considerable enthusiasm and conviction” was very appropriate. Thank you to Mr Loiacono, Mrs Pirie and Mrs Bradshaw for preparing the children for their performance.
I look forward to hearing our School Choir perform at the Vasto Club in Balcatta next Wednesday at 1.00pm.
BATTERY RECYCLING
In 2010 Planet Ark commissioned an independent study on the battery recycling behaviour of Australians. Some of the findings were:
- About 345 million handheld batteries (mainly AA and AAA) are purchased in Australia each year of which 81% are single use.
- Approximately only 6% of all batteries are recycled with the remainder going to landfill through being deposited in household garbage bins.
- 75% of respondents to the study said that they would definitely recycle batteries if there was an easy way to recycle them.
Even though this study was eight years ago, the situation does not appear to have improved significantly but there is an answer. Our school has a battery recycling bin in the school library so I encourage everyone in our community to bring in their spent batteries so that they can be recycled. In correspondence from the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council who collect our batteries they state that our school has collected 13.20kg of batteries over the past 12 months. This doesn’t appear too bad, but the school that has collected the most in the same period collected 588.6kg. This is an amazing result and would be very difficult to better however I’m sure we could do much better than we have in the past. I encourage everyone to get on board and bring in their spent batteries for the sake of our environment.
PARKING
Please refrain from parking on the grassed areas near the school office and on Daly Street as this blocks the view of drivers and is potentially very dangerous for children and parents.
SCHOOL FEES
As our school runs on a very tight budget I encourage families to ensure that school fees are paid in a timely manner. Should you be experiencing difficulties with payment of fees please make an appointment to see me.

PASTORAL CARE
I have introduced at Notre Dame a program called Drumbeat, it is now in its second year. If you are at the school in the latter part of the day on a Monday you might hear the drums. This is a hand drumming program to engage students in cooperating with each other and to explore a number of different relationship issues such as community, peer pressure, teamwork and others. The drum that the students learn to play is an African drum called a djembe. The students learn to play a few songs and to participate in some games using these rhythms. They are also given the opportunity to make up their own rhythms and are certainly engaged and have fun.
The program is conducted over 10 sessions for a period of 45 minutes during school time. Each of the sessions is structured to cover topics such as values, peer pressure, identity, social harmony, teamwork and emotional expression. At the end of the program the students do a small performance in front of their peers and parents or guardians. Yesterday two groups of Year 6 students performed for their peers, buddy class and some parents. They were awesome.

LIBRARY NEWS
Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children's literature and you will often see children's book character parades. Generally, the CBCA Book of the Year winner's announcement is the third Friday in August, and CBCA Book Week commences the following day. Please see cbca.org.au for the full list of wonderful Australian books being celebrated this year.
Notre Dame School will be celebrating by starting Book Week on Monday morning (20th August) with a parade. Each year level has an open theme of “My Favourite Book Character”. All Primary School students can dress as their favourite book character and bring either the book or a copy of the front cover. Start planning for your costume now!
The theme this year is ‘Find your treasure’ and we have been talking with the students in library time that treasure doesn’t just have to be coins or pirates. A treasure inside your favourite book might be:
- ‘magic’ that helps others eg. Possum Magic/Harry Potter/Matilda
- ‘a faraway place’ eg. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/The Magic Faraway Tree/39 Storey Treehouse
- ‘an adventure’ eg. Famous five series/ Harry Potter/Where the wild things are
- ‘humour’ eg. Don’t let the Pigeon drive the bus/Busting/The Twits/Gangsta Granny/Diary of a Wimpy Kid/Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing
- ‘a love story’ eg. Swan Lake/Koala Lou/Velveteen Rabbit
- ‘sport’ eg. Sporty Kids series
- ‘mystery and suspense’ eg. 39 Clues series/Lemony Snicket series/Billie B Mystery series/Conspiracy 365 series
- ‘fantasy’ eg. Alice in Wonderland/ Beast Quest series/Books by Emily Rodda

- ‘a crazy or funny character’ eg. Giraffes can’t dance/Horton hatches an egg/Hark, It’s Me, Ruby Lee!
During the lead up to book week we encourage students to read a variety of books and we will be having some amazing library activities with the shortlisted books. Please come and visit the library during this exciting time.

Additional Support with Reading, Writing and Spelling
Some children need more help learning to read and write than others, even with the best teaching methods at school. The DSF Literacy Clinic in East Vic Park provides expert tuition for those students needing extra assistance to develop strong literacy skills. Experienced teachers at the DSF Literacy Clinics provide students with enjoyable, high-quality tutoring and support. Children of all ages are welcome to attend, regardless of the reason they are struggling. This includes those students who are falling behind in years one and two (as early intervention is important in reducing the impact of literacy difficulties). Sessions are provided at a reduced rate because they are offered in small groups of up to four students, although one-on-one tuition is also available. Parents interested in further information can inquire in person or contact the DSF Literacy Clinic at The Park Shopping Centre in East Victoria Park on 9470 4140 or park@dsf.net.au. You can also learn more about DSF (The Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation) by visitingwww.dsf.net.au.
