The Mini Skirt

Key Points
Mary Quant and the Parisian, André Courrèges designed the mini skirt. There is no real consensus as to who designed it first. Mary Quant opened what became the iconic boutique Bazaar in 1955 on King’s Road in London’s Chelsea neighborhood. Supermodel Twiggy became he unofficial poster child at the time for the miniskirt look. Mary ran the boutique with her co-founded husband, Alexander Greene and Archie McNair. The mini skirt was named after Mary’s favorite car, the Mini Cooper. To Quant she thought the girls on the street invented the miniskirt. The miniskirt perfectly captured the zing of booming 1960s London.
