Kinder Literacy Academy Re-Organization
Tuesday, May 5, 2022
1:40-2:40pm
Kudos to Kindergarten teachers for mixing their students all year during Literacy Academies. We followed the Covid guidelines in keeping our little ones safe and were still able to mix classes. We have seen amazing results in their Progress Monitoring Data. Tuesday will be the third time reorganizing this year to meet the students needs and target their instruction. They are ready for first grade! 😊
Notes from our STEAM Instructional Coach-Angela Muro
Hello colleagues,
As we approach the end of the third and final grading period, consider the assessment options we have in our Amplify Science curriculum. We have On-the-Fly assessments, End of chapter assessments, Student self-assessments, and Critical Juncture assessments that are all formative. We also have End of Unit Assessments (K-5) and Benchmark Assessments (3-5) that are summative. It is not necessary to administer all these assessments, but the formative assessments should be used to drive instruction and address preconceptions as well as misconceptions. Summative assessments should be used to determine if students met performance expectations in NGSS. If you have questions or need help with Amp Sci assessments, come by Room 5 or shoot me an email.
Updates from our TSP Advisor-Juan Carrillo
Hello Malabar Family, testing season continues as we carry on with our ELPAC testing for English Learners. 3-6 grade, please do your best to have your English Learners done with ELPAC before we start the SBA testing on May 17th. The completion report portal shows 54 out of 160 need the Listening section, 31 out of 160 need the Speaking, 58 out of 160 need the Reading and 40 need the Writing.
SBAC testing:
As mentioned, our SBA testing starts on May 17th. We will start off with a testing pep rally on Monday May 16. (more details to come) Please make sure you turn in your attachments B or C should you want to designate any supports to your students by this Wednesday, so I have time to input them onto the system.
Finally, we will be providing proctors for all teachers to support you in administering the test. Each teacher in grades 3 to 6 will get either a lead team member or Teacher Assistant to help you proctor on each day of testing. We will have a schedule for you soon.
That's all for now and as always please come and see me should you have any questions and or concerns.
Updates from Our PSW-Amanda Oyague
Hello everyone! Thank you all for your warm welcome to Malabar. If you need support with a student, please give me a call to room 10A, I'd be more than happy to assist in any way I can. I am at Malabar on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Due to confidentiality concerns, please refrain from emailing about student referrals and instead use the referral link sent.
Preparing for State Testing-SBA (Grades 3-6)
Let's focus on the following:
- ELA-focus on writing. Please make sure that students are writing independently everyday for a variety of purposes. Students will need to respond to all text types. Student should not be copying from the board or from the teacher.
- ELA-Continue to stress the need to cite from two different sources. Model and have them practice using sentence stems.
- Math-have students solve one to two sample items on a daily basis. Model your thinking as you solve problems together and then give students opportunities to solve independently.
- Please make sure that everyone has a working chromebook this week. Keep Chromebooks in the cart so they are ready for testing. If you need any extra chromebooks, please see Ms. Tiffer.
- Planning for a positive testing environment-we need to plan to post inspirational quotes in the classroom. I will print some growth mindset examples for you to post in the classroom. Remember that we need to cover any resources students might use.

COVID Updates
Positive COVID Tests
If any students or staff test positive, they may return back to the classroom after a five day quarantine. They must take an antigen test and have a negative result. For the following 10 days, all students and staff must wear a mask in the classroom.
COVID Vaccination Clinic
We will have a COVID vaccination mobile team on Tuesday, May 24 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Please share with families so they can take advantage of this event to vaccinate their family.
COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test
Rapid tests will now be good for 72 hours. An updated PCR test must be on file for all staff and students. If the PCR test expires, you need to take the Rapid Test to remain on site but also make an appointment to take the PCR test.
Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questions
Effective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
This week, Ms. J. Chavez will be visiting ELA and Ms. Gutierrez will visit math instruction.
Teacher Appreciation Week
For teachers, your Early Departure Ticket can be used in two ways: You may depart early one day or you can use the hour to complete end of year tasks. The only thing the Lead Team asks is that you notify the member a week early. Please contact the person whose name is on the ticket for coverage. Time is always a great gift!
