The Spartan Scoop
Your Monthly Guide to School News and Events June 2018
Greeting Spartan Scholars and Families,
I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to our students, parents, volunteers, teachers, and staff for making this a year to remember! We have shared many successes this year and I am grateful for our bright future ahead. Tuesday, June 12 Spartans were recognized at the Elementary STAR Award Celebration for their contribution to service and leadership.

Andrea Gonzalez-Quintanilla, third grade Spartan in the Dual Language Immersion program, led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance at the June School Board Meeting. She is pictured below with Mr. Hunter, Board Chairman and Mr. Nichol, Acting Superintendent. It was announced at the meeting that Ms. Robin Boone, Assistant Principal, will be transferred to Denbigh Early Childhood Center and Marshall Early Learning Center for the 2018-2019 school year. We wish her well as she begins the new school year supporting preschool and kindergarten scholars. The School Board approved the appointment of Mrs. Lindsay Kidd for the position of Assistant Principal at Saunders. Please give her a warm Spartan welcome when she begins in August!
As a result of the safety forum held in January, we partnered with the Newport News City Department of Engineering and the Safe Routes to School Coordinator. A proposed traffic flow was shared with administrators following the traffic study. I am seeking your input! Please click on the button below to vote on the existing traffic flow or the proposed traffic flow. I will communicate any traffic flow changes prior to the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year.
As one school year comes to an end, we are already planning for the upcoming school year. I am happy to share with you that Costco Wholesale will again be providing backpacks and starter supplies for every student next year. We will send home the 2018-2019 supply list with report cards Thursday, June 14, the last day of school. Students should not bring their backpacks to school the last day.
Grades 1-4 will be hosting student-led conferences and celebrations and you are invited! Please contact your child’s teacher for the date and time. While you are in the building please check out the lost and found in the main lobby. Any items left after Thursday, June 14 will be donated to the Goodwill.
Together we can achieve the extraordinary!
