Mother's Day (May 8, 2022)
Happy Mothers day to all the Mothers of the world!
Fun Facts About Mothers Day:
- Mothers day is not held on the same day every year in the United States it's annually held on the second Sunday of May.
The first Mother's Day holiday came in the 1900's as a result of Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. With her mother's 1905 death, Anna Jarvis created Mother's Day as a way of honoring mothers for what they do for their children.
More calls are made on Mother's Day than any other day of the year. Reportedly there are over 100 million calls are made on the second Sunday of May every year.
The holiday quickly became a commercialized opportunity for producers to sell flowers, candies, and cards. Anna Reeves Jarvis felt this was detracting from the love and intimate aspects of the holiday and defied this by starting boycotts, walkouts, and condemned first lady Eleanor Roosevelt for using the day as a means of fundraising. Jarvis used all her money in this fight.

Father's Day (June 19, 2022)
Fun Facts about Father's Day:
Father’s Day celebrates and honors the men who have embraced the essential role of fatherhood. On this day, we also thank fathers and father figures for the sacrifices they make, for the responsibility of nurturing and raising children, and for devotion to their family.
The first known Father’s Day occurred in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, hundreds of men died in the worst mining accident in U.S. history. The service happened because of the efforts of Grace Golden Clayton. While missing her own dad, who had died in 1896, Mrs. Clayton wanted to honor the many fathers who had died in the explosion, which killed more than 360 men and boys, and left about 1,000 children fatherless.
In 2022, Father’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 19. This is just a couple days before summer solstice which makes it the perfect time to kick-off the summer season with a father-focused barbecue, camping trip, beach day, or other outdoor activity!
Here is a Fathers Day Poem:
A boy and his dad on a fishing-trip—
Builders of life’s companionship!
Oh, I envy them, as I see them there
Under the sky in the open air,
For out of the old, old long-ago
Come the summer days that I used to know,
When I learned life’s truths from my father’s lips
As I shared the joy of his fishing-trips.
–Edgar Guest (1881–1959)
First Day of SUMMER! (June 21st)
Fun Summer Facts:
The first modern Olympic Games were held in the summer in 1896 in Athens, Greece. The first day of summer is between June 20th and June 22nd every year. The first day of summer is called the summer solstice, and the day varies due to the Earth’s rotation not exactly reflecting our calendar year. Watermelon is one of summer’s best summer treats. Did you know that watermelons are not a fruit, but a vegetable instead? They belong to the cucumber family of vegetables. The Eiffel Tower actually grows in the heat of the summer. Due to the iron expanding, the tower grows about 6 inches every summer. Ice pops were invented in 1905 by an 11 year old boy.

Although there is no specific date or origin or inventor who started ice cream. But we do know Americans love ice cream. The first advertisement for ice cream was in 1777, it appeared in The New York Gazette. Our first president George Washington spent approximately $200 on ice cream during the summer of 1790. That would be equivalent to $6,250.09 today. In 1904 the ice cream world changed by the World Fair’s invention of the ice cream cone. The United States is the largest producer & consumer of ice cream in the world. By the 1920s Americans were able to make and store ice cream in their own home because of the invention of the freezer, ice cream has continually improved and grown by creating new flavors different candies, and toppings. There are now millions of different combinations and only continue to grow. There are some very unusual flavors of ice cream, some of these include sweet corn, kraft macaroni & cheese, Flamin ‘ Hot Cheetos, sweet avocado, sweet potato, dill pickle, and even lobster flavor. With all of these odd and unusual flavors, chocolate & vanilla ice cream is still number one.
