Nov 13: All the news from Ishinryu Karate Australia (NSW)

Welcome to the first online edition of our newsletter

Ishinryu in NSW sends out many emails to members each month, but an online newsletter once or twice a term will put all the big news in one place.

NEW! Blue dots are for clicking on.... and clicking on pictures makes them larger.

Our 2014 Summer Course

Our brilliant summer course is about to celebrate its 20th birthday.

Our founder, Sensei Ticky Donovan OBE 9th Dan will be our very special guest on the course and in the dojo.

Sensei Wayne Otto OBE 5th Dan will again be returning, we so love having Sensei Wayne in Sydney and know excited many of you are already.

The course is for EVERYONE, from our international competitors and black belts to our brand new tiny white belts. The course is an awesome experience, with way more than half of the participants from non-Ishinryu styles, many travelling from overseas or interstate. It is that good.

There are a bucketload of details on the online form. Please head over for a quick look, no rush to enter the course but if you wish to stay at the Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort we always encourage you to get a deposit down early.

Dentist in the dojo.... Thursday 14 November

Mouthguards will be moulded on Thursday 14 November at the Menai dojo. The booking sheet filled almost instantly so we know we need to book an extra date - we'll let you know when we have that sorted.

All those on the "confirmed" list will receive an email before Thursday confirming the time. For all those who put themselves on the reserve list, please only come to the dojo if you also intend training on that night as there is certainly no guarantee that you can get your mouthguard.

We do find this a fabulous initiative and thank All Smilez at Kirrawee for their very cost effective service. It is all about safety in sport and we are keen to embrace it.

2014 Ishinryu Club Championships: Entries now open!

Our tremendous annual championships is only a few weeks away! As hinted in previous emails, it will be held on Saturday 30 November at the Menai dojo.

The online entry form link is below (see the blue dot). Paper forms will also be in the dojo.

This tournament is for EVERYONE. The events are kata, kumite (sparring) and gladiator (padded sticks for kids up to age 15). The entry form only asks you to enter the type of event, it is when entries close that we subdivide into groups of students of similar age, experience and height. Safety and enjoyment are paramount.

You only need your club sparring equipment to participate, and a mouthguard for gladiator and kumite.

Junior World Championships - Guadalajara, Spain

Those who watch our facebook page will know that Sensei Tony is in Spain with the Fijian Karate team for this major championship. As this newsletter is typed Sandip is competing (and we so wish the WKF would update their website with the draw and results!!!). The beauty of the online newsletter is that we can provide updates when the event is over! So look here again over the weekend...

After the World's Sensei Tony is travelling to England to teach for two nights in Sensei Jonathan Mottram's dojo (you will remember the sensational Sensei Jon from our course in March). It will be a huge few nights for Ishinryu as a little birdy also told us that Sensei Ticky will be in attendance to watch his number one student - that's bound to pull in an abundance of Ishinryu heirarchy to the dojo. Wish we were there....

Sutherland Shire Local Business Awards - we're finalists!

A huge thank you to all of our students and families who responded to one tiny facebook post to vote for us in the awards! We made the finals based on number of votes, but then it's quality, quality, quality that selects the winner.

Sometime in the last week we would have been phoned or visited by judges to gauge our customer service, quality product and value for money. Whether we win or not we're thrilled to have gotten this far. You may have spotted us in the Leader today (head to pages 22 and 24)....

The award ceremony is on Wednesday 13 November and I'm sure we'll have some facebook presence happening that night.

Last gradings for 2014!

  • Saturday 14 December: Black belt grading (by invitation)
  • Wednesday 18 December: General grading up to 1st kyu

Both gradings will be held at the Menai dojo. The entry form will become live in early December. For now, just block out the appropriate date! It is the last day of public school so we are very hopeful of no clashes with school functions.

Our great Christmas party class!

It is probably a bit early to be talking about this, but it shall be held on Thursday 19 December at the Menai dojo. Santa hats (or antlers) are compulsory! In gi's, prepared for a lot of exhausting Christmas karate.

We will send out more details as the day approaches, just giving you something else to put in your diary....

New club flyer

We are going form-mad around here right now.... If you have any family or friends who may be interested in karate perhaps just forward them our new flyer. There is detail, photos and links to our timetable, all in a neat and funky package!
