"What's Going On In Our World"
Mrs. Sadler's 5th grade class
Welcome!!
Welcome Everyone! It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know your children over the past week. We have spent a lot of time building community and getting to know one another. We have focused on establishing and maintaining a "Growth Mindset" vs "Fixed Mindset". A growth mindset is defined by believing that you can be good at anything if you continue to practice and work hard, and NOT QUIT. As mathematicians we discussed the power of the word yet, instead of can't. I encourage you to help your child establish a growth mindset at home as well.

Mathematician's Corner
This week as mathematicians we started by discussing the purpose of math workshop, and what math workshop should look/ feel like. As a class we worked to make sure that we were all knowledgeable about the structure of math workshop. Math Workshop starts with a mini lesson, and then we practice math in small groups which are called our math centers.
After defining math workshop for our class we began Chapter 1 in our math book which is centered around Place Value. We started with Place Value through the millions, and comparing/order whole numbers through the millions. Next week will continue to use place value to help us model fractions/decimals, represent decimals, and to realize the role that place value plays in decimal numbers.

Scientist and Historian's Corner
As Scientist's we have been reviewing the Science Process Skills. The Science Process Skills will be the foundation for all of our investigations in science this year. Through learning the Science Process Skills students will be able to develop the habits of mind that are necessary for scientific thinking, and to engage in science in ways that are similar to those used by scientists and engineers. Please make sure that your child is discussing the content inside their Science Notebook with you daily.
As Historian's this week has been centered around summarize the conclusion of the Civil War. Next week we will begin our Reconstruction Unit of Study. We will begin by discussing what Reconstruction means, and thinking about ways that the Union could be preserved after the Civil War.
