Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
February 7, 2020
From the desk of: Principal Hoese
This weekend, the University of Iowa Dance Marathon organization will be hosting The Big Event. What is The Big Event? I'm glad you asked.
The Big Event is a 24-hour Dance Marathon where students assemble to celebrate the children survivors and remember the children who have passed away throughout the year. Dancers remain on their feet for the full 24 hours with no caffeine allowed.
Earlier this school year, Fulton alum Abby Willging led a fundraiser effort at FES which saw $1,000 go to the organization. When her mother, Dianne Willging, asked me if FES would be willing to write cards and notes of support for her this weekend, I was more than happy for the greatest little elementary school in the universe to assist! You can see the numerous cards and notes from our school family in the photo below.
Since that time she has continued her efforts and even run a marathon (all 26.2 miles!) in support of Dance Marathon. I noticed this morning when I made my donation to her campaign that she was just shy of her fundraising goal. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so at the link below.
It is truly inspiring and makes my heart swell with pride as we see Steamer alums making their impact on the world. I will never say they were former Steamers... because everyone in #SteamerNation already knows... Once a Steamer, Always a Steamer!
Good luck this weekend, Abby -- thanks for letting us all tag along for the journey!

Friends for Charity Makes Donation to FES
Friends for Charity is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help those in need. Organized by a group if friends in 2011, more than $50,000 has been given away in the Gateway and surrounding areas. Money is raised through donations, grants, and fundraisers.
On Monday, February 3rd Friends for Charity president Pat Cummings presented Fulton Elementary School principal Jeffrey Hoese with a donation check for $500. This will go towards the FES Clothing Closet which provides clothes for students in need.

100 Days at FES!
Kindergarten's Celebration!
Kindergarten students celebrated the 100th day of school on Tuesday, February 4. Students in Miss Dornbush's class made 100 day hats, took several 100 seconds challenges, such as jumping, running in place, and staying absolutely quiet for 100 seconds. They thought the time would never end! We also built towers out of 100 cups and pattern blocks. They also made creations out of 100 toothpicks and marshmallows. We also had a 100 piece candy hunt. We had a fun day celebration 100!
1st Grade
First graders in 1C enjoyed celebrating the 100th Day of School! The activities included math, STEAM, art, poetry. and snacks with the number 100!
2nd Grade
2nd Grade Symmetry
Students in 2C were introduced to symmetry as a part of their STEAM activity this week. They were shown how snowflakes are perfect models of symmetry. After the lesson they were asked to work in pairs to design their own snowflakes using toothpicks, popsicle sticks, straws and cotton swabs. The students were able to produce excellent examples of symmetry. The class voted on the snowflakes in two categories. Engineers chosen for Best Symmetry were Amare and Gracey. The engineers chosen for Best Design were Hadley and Jax. Great job 2C!

The 2 top classes for reading minutes were 2B with 6830 minutes and 3C with 6819 minutes. There was only 11 minutes difference between the 2 classes. Congratulations!! The two winning classes were treated to lunch in the LRC. The Students in 3C sure enjoyed their "carnival style" lunch!
Trigger the Big Top Horse
Today was the final day that Trigger gave horse rides. He will be going home to Riverfront Antiques. Please stop in at Riverfront Antiques, downtown Clinton, and mention that you know Trigger from Fulton Elementary. Read-a-thon slips can be turned into the library or the office. PTO will be totaling the money soon for the new playground equipment. Pizza Ranch generously donated children's free buffet certificates for all the students. We have a generous and supportive community. Thank you for reading and coming to Big Top Books . Until next January, sincerely The Library Ladies!
UPDATE:
Trigger has been VERY nice and gave many rides to students all month. Trigger gave 880 rides for a total of $220.00 for PTO for new playground equipment. Some of the students even did a one arm rodeo swing as they galloped away on Trigger. Thanks again to Riverfront Antiques and Fulton PTO. Teachers there are ice cream sandwiches in the workroom freezer for your Friday treat. Have a great weekend, LeAnn
KIDS Heart Challenge
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Our school is participating in a very special community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association. We’re joining the fight against our nation’s #1 and #3 killers- cardiovascular disease and stroke. Kid’s Heart Challenge (formerly Jump Rope for Heart) is a nationwide educational fundraising event that helps students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health while raising funds to fight heart disease and stroke. The money our school raises will fund potentially lifesaving research and will support programs that help people in our community.
Most people don’t realize that the roots for cardiovascular disease in adults often begin in childhood from age 10 and even younger. That’s why it’s important to make changes now to help your children and other family members. Eat healthy foods, stay physically active and live tobacco-free.
Kid’s Heart Challenge is a fun and effective way to teach heart-healthy living. It emphasizes the importance of physical activity as our children do something they enjoy by jumping rope.
Please sign your child’s consent form to allow him or her to participate if you would like them too. The money you contribute will fund research that will save more lives each year. Our efforts can truly make a difference.
Last year K-5th grade raised $3,750 towards this worthwhile event. The school goal this year is $4,000. The students will earn prizes depending on the amount they collect. Just remember that it is the district’s policy that no student can go door-to-door to collect money. There are also directions to make an online donation site.
We will also be making an honor/memory wall for those that have been affected by heart disease or stroke.
All envelopes are due no later than Monday, February 10th to be eligible for prizes.
Sincerely,
Michelle Rausenberger
