7th Grade Field Trip

All Edgewood 7th graders will be visiting the Minnesota Science Museum in St. Paul as a field trip on Tuesday, April 4. Students will leave Edgewood around 9:30 am and return around 2:00 pm, in time for the regular after-school buses. This field trip aligns directly with the content our 7th graders study in their Science class and is free for all students. We need volunteers to chaperone! If you would like to chaperone this 7th grade field trip, please email Dan Perucco at daniel.perucco@moundsviewschools.org.

Please see below for Edgewood’s permission policy regarding field trips:

At various times during the school year, students will leave the school campus for educational field trips. These field trips will occur during the school day to enhance learning in one of the following areas: core/allied arts courses, Community service or grade level event. Transportation is provided by the Mounds View School District with no cost to the student. Field trips are included as part of the educational experience for all students and will be limited to local destinations in the Twin Cities area. On occasion, field trips may be within walking distance from Edgewood. Parents/guardians will be informed in advance of any field trips via email from the teacher(s) hosting the field trip or from the front office. In addition, field trips will be published in the weekly Edgewood E-news for parent convenience. At any time, parents may opt out of a field trip for their child by contacting the hosting teacher or calling the main office.

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES & PROGRAMS

Garden Club

Do you like to dig in the dirt and be outside? Do you want to help your community? If you answered yes to either question, garden club is for you! Garden Club will start on Thursday, April 6, and will take place each Thursday after that in Room 011, Ms. Miller's room.

We will grow plants, weed the gardens to prepare them for spring planting, and hopefully make a perennial rain garden, as well! Half of all the food we harvest goes to the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf to help our community. Hope you join us for the first garden club on April 6th!

Join Marching Band!

We are thrilled to announce that the 2023 Irondale Marching Knights competitive season will be kicking off in May! The 2023 Marching band is open to all current 8th-11th grade students at Irondale, Mounds View, St. Anthony, Chippewa, Highview, and Edgewood, and is one of the largest and most successful competitive organizations in the Mounds View School District.

The Irondale Marching Band Information Night will take place on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:00 pm in the Irondale Auditorium.

Marching band is a dynamic performance ensemble that combines music, movement, and visual effects all on a football field. The level of work, talent, and determination that goes into these productions is simply amazing. The Irondale Marching Knights is one of the premier marching units in the Midwest and has been named a finalist and champion at some of the most prestigious events in our area. The Marching Band is the back-to-back Class AAA Minnesota State Marching Band CHAMPION (2021 and 2022), and we look forward to building on the successes from last season and elevating the program to the next level.

Students who join the Marching Knights make new friends and unforgettable memories all while becoming more responsible, organized, and time efficient. It’s a wonderful opportunity to build community and be a part of something greater. If your student has even the slightest interest in joining the Irondale Marching Knights, we invite you to attend our Info Night. No experience is necessary. We hope to see you there!

Know the Facts: Mental Health

Did you know that 17% of teenagers engage in self-harm behavior ? Usually, when people self-harm, it is not done as a suicide attempt. Rather, they self-harm as a way to release painful emotions. Learn more and get support at Cornell University’s Self-Injury & Recovery Resources. As always, reach out to your student’s Dean, our team or your child’s primary care provider for additional help.

Let’s Talk About It blog: What should I do if I am concerned about my child’s mental health?

All children (and adults for that matter!) experience times of poor mental health in which they struggle with overwhelming feelings of sadness, anger, stress, and fear. These intense feelings may manifest in physical complaints like stomachaches, difficulty concentrating, school avoidance, aggression, and more. It is heart wrenching to see your children hurting and not be able to take that pain away. In this month’s blog post, learn about ideas and resources available to help support your child’s mental health such as mental health therapy (including how to find a therapist).

REMINDERS

Bus Safety

We have noticed several bus behaviors that do not reflect our values here at Edgewood. We work with American Transportation to ensure that students and drivers have an enjoyable experience. Our message to students and families is riding the bus is a privilege, not a right. If negative interactions occur, a meeting with administrators, parents, and students will happen to discuss the next steps. We hope never to have such a meeting. Parents, please work in partnership with us by reiterating our expectations regarding transportation. Students are to remain seated while the bus is in motion—no food or beverages on the bus. We are respectful to other individuals and follow the bus driver's directions. We appreciate your support in keeping all students respectful and safe.
