The Steps to Becoming a US Citizen
By Tera Peña & Rachel Freeze
Beginning the Process
The first step into becoming a US citizen is by signing a Declaration of Intention claiming that you desire to be a US citizen. Then after living in the US for five years, and if you are at least 18 years of age and have lived at least 3 months in the state you would like naturalization in, you may file an application to be processed.
Interview and Examination
The next step is attending an interview with a USCIS official. You will be judged accordingly and must meet all requirements. The decision is also based on your character. After, you must take an exam that includes reading, writing, english, and various facts about US history and government. Then the USCIS makes their decision.
Oath of Allegiance
The final step in becoming a US citizen is attending the ceremony and pledging an oath of allegiance swearing to be loyal to the US at all costs, obeying all of the laws and the constitution, and to perform military duties and others if necessary. Once you sign the documents you are now considered a citizen of the United States! Congratulations!
