Fifth Grade AIM
Know & Go
Civil War Battles and our Civil War Simulation
We started class today by having an "editors meeting" which means I basically quizzed each newscast group on what they had "uncovered" about their battle during their research. It was easy for them to see that their newscast research must dive deeper to uncover the hidden issues, motivations and effects on the rest of the country. They quickly got into their groups and restarted their research in earnest. As a brain break near the end of their research time I gave them 5 minutes to plan and then perform a silent retelling of their battle. They are a dramatic bunch! We spent the rest of the afternoon working on our Civil War simulation by finishing our flags, selecting our ranks and "earning" our weapons and provisions. The weather was so beautiful I decided to take them outside for 20 minutes and let them create and practice a "training drill" for extra points in their simulation. They will continue to come to AIM during their social studies block to work on their newscasts this week and next week. We will not have AIM after their STAAR tests but will resume class the following week.
