February 2020 Edition
Principal's Message
Greeting Knight Family,
- "There are two types of people who will tell you that you cannot make a difference in this world: those who are afraid to try, and those who are afraid you will succeed." - Ray Goforth
- "We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated." - Maya Angelou
- "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Wishing is not enough; we must do." - Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
- "What you lack in talent can be made up with desire, hustle, and giving 110% all the time." - Don Zimmer
- "Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill
- "Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit." - Conrad Hilton
When you read the quotes above, what do you think they all have in common? Growth Mindset is what I think of when I read those quotes. Basically, the quotes show that we must not be defeated, we must chase passion, we must give 110%, we must have courage, and we must do or take action. Having a growth mindset is a belief that we can control our own ability and we can learn and improve. The key to success is having a growth mindset.
Some keywords or phrases associated with having a growth mindset are:
· View challenges as opportunities
· Acknowledge and embrace our imperfections
· Challenge
· Improve
· Anyone can be good at anything, but skill comes from practice.
· Having a growth mindset improves self-esteem
A growth mindset can have an impact and be very powerful for all of us.
Just a little something to think about as we journey to success.
Commitment to Character
We invite your family to engage in dialogue around this topic this month as we explore tolerance during our morning announcements, class meetings and restorative circles.
Please see the February Dinner Dilemma below.
Dress Code
We have been seeing an increase in the number of students out of uniform, especially in our upper grades.
Please review the Uniform Policy with your student/s.
Purpose
North Shore Elementary is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for instruction and learning. A proper learning atmosphere is essential for the education of each student, and student safety and achievement are the highest priorities. To this end, implementing a modified dress code is an effective strategy to promote an atmosphere of academia focused on learning and appropriate behaviors.
Guidelines
North Shore Elementary uniform consists of the following:
- Pants, shorts, Capri pants, skirts, skorts or jumpers in the colors of navy blue, black, or any shade of khaki. Shorts, skirts or skorts must extend below fingertips.
- Shirts with short or long sleeves and a collar (polo, dress-style with button, or turtleneck) in solid colors of Royal Blue, Navy, Castle Grey, Dragon Red, or Royal Purple. In the event of cold weather, a solid-colored sweatshirt, pullover or cardigan sweater is permitted over the uniform shirt.
- Closed-back shoes (no flip flops or sandals).
Staff will use positive reinforcement to obtain compliance with the modified dress code requirements, however, when a student fails to comply with the policy, the following consequences are possible.
First Offense
1. A student whose clothing or accessories violate the modified dress copy policy may be removed from class with a chance to correct and return to class.
2. Such correction may include the use of school-provided clothing, if available, until the end of the school day or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. The infraction will be communicated to the parent or guardian.
Subsequent and Repeated Infractions
Repeated violations of the Modified Dress policy will be treated as disruptive behavior and/or defiance of the school authority. These violations may result in out-of-school suspensions as prescribed by the Student Code of Conduct, Disciplinary Due Process.
Academic Consequences
In-school suspension for violation of the Modified Dress policy will not affect a student’s academic standing.
Fresh Start
Violations of the Standard School Attire policy will not carry over from the previous grading period, semester or school year.
If you need help with uniforms, please contact Mrs. Dumaine, of Mrs. Centner-Conlon for assistance.
Volunteers
We are so excited to have volunteers and community partners who are making a difference at North Shore to help students develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are the hallmark of quality education.
Our volunteers have supported us in the cafeteria, special events, building and ground maintenance, PTA, SAC, and many other areas.
If you are not a registered volunteer, please consider signing up today. We are seeking volunteers for the Media Center, office, cafeteria, and classroom.

PTA News
Can you believe the school year as already more than halfway over?
Neither can we!
Your North Shore PTA wants to thank our school community for a tremendous year so far! We have exceeded both our membership and fundraising numbers compared to this time last year. More importantly, we have increased our reach to provide our teachers and families the support they need and deserve. We have had record attendance at our family socials, including the BBQ and Literacy Night, and at both Fall Festival and the Turkey Trot. Thank you to all who attended and especially to all of our volunteers, without whom, none of this is possible.
The second half of the year is filled with more fun, learning, and community! We were proud to support the book purchases for One School, One Book. We hope you all enjoyed reading it with your children! Although our membership numbers are great, we have not yet reached our goal of having a member to represent every child in our school, so be on the lookout for our Spring Membership Drive starting this Thursday, January 30th – Thursday, February 6th. We’ll cap off this drive with our annual PTA Spaghetti Dinner and Math Night. We’ll dine in the courtyard and enjoy math games in the cafeteria. Being a PTA member does not come with a requirement to volunteer, and if you are unable to pay the fee, that is ok. PTA membership grants you greater access to knowing what is happening at our school and a voice to advocate what is best for our children. If we increase our PTA membership by at least 60, we will be throwing a popcorn party!
Our next general meeting is Tuesday. February 4, 2020. We will be discussing both the by-laws committee and the nominating committee, so if you are interested in serving on either committee and/or in serving on the PTA Board next year, please attend to hear about the committees and their processes.
We have so many wonderful activities planned to continue our community building this spring! We are already looking forward to our multi-cultural family potluck at the beginning of April and our ice cream social and science night at the end of April. Garden classes are in full swing, and stay tuned for our Earth Day announcement! We continue to support field trips, 7th hour, and professional development efforts, so stay tuned to our page on the school website, the PTA Facebook page and our email updates about what we are doing and opportunities for you to participate in our efforts.
Thank you!
