Trombly Terriers Taking Care of Business

A Note from Mr. Fitz....
It was a great opening week! The weather was beautiful, the students returned from summer with loads of energy and eager to learn. The halls were buzzing with excitement during our Back to School Night and the staff has worked hard preparing for the upcoming school year. A perfect way to start the school year!
As mentioned during the Back To School Night presentation, literacy will be Trombly’s main focus this upcoming school year. Staff will be part of on-going professional development this year with the focus on improving instruction in the area of reading. We are asking each home to be committed to being part of the process of creating lifelong readers. The following are some suggestions of how you can support your child:
Create a sacred time during the day or night when everyone in the house is reading. We are all incredibly busy but imagine how powerful 15 minutes of everyone in the house reading could be.
Read along side your child. Children love doing things with their parents. Finding time to read next to each other can make reading a special time that everyone will look forward to.
Read books with your child. One of the greatest things about reading is being able to discuss what you are reading with others. By reading the same book, you can provide your child with opportunities to have the kinds of discussions that will motivate your child to keep reading
Make sure your child sees you reading, Even when your child isn’t reading, if he or she sees you reading they will know that reading is something that you take joy in and that you make sure to find time for it.
Take your child to the library. There is no need to buy your child every book that he or she wants to read. Take advantage of the local library system that can provide access to some incredible books.
Ask your child about the books he/she is reading. The more kids talk about the books they are reading, the more they will want to keep reading. Even if they are not enjoying a particular book, you can learn a lot about a person as a reader and they can learn a lot about themselves by discussing what it is they do not like.
Talk to your child about the books you are reading. Tell your child about the books you are reading. Also, make sure you share how you selected the books that you are reading.
Do not judge what your child is reading as not being good enough. It’s tempting to tell our children what they are reading isn’t real reading or of quality. Every positive reading experience a child can have, where they make it through an entire text, will make it more likely that they will pick up another book.
Read in the moments “in-between.” Finding 15 or 20 minutes can be near impossible. Sometimes, the best way to find time are the moments in-between something such as driving in the car, waiting at a doctor’s or dentist’s office.
Read to your child. Most children love to be read to, even our 5th graders. It’s enjoyable and a great change of pace. Listening to you read will also help your child develop essential reading skills.
