Volume 2, Issue 10 - October 18, 2018
Dear Families,
We continue to work on our drop off/pick up procedures, and as it gets darker in the morning and the weather becomes more unpleasant, we want to send a kind reminder that it is OK for you to drop your kid off by the curve even when you are not right by the front door. This really speeds the process up for all the families. In addition, if you arrive at school at 6:55 am, you may drop off your student and leave. Students can wait outside for 5 min under the awning until we open the doors at 7:00 am. Just make sure they dress for the weather! If the temperatures outside fall below the guidelines, we will let the students in the building at 6:55 am.
WINTER
32 degrees to 90 degrees – comfortable for outdoor play
10 degrees to 32 degrees – use caution. May be necessary to decrease outdoor time.
10 degrees or below – children should not go outside.
**Temperature includes wind-chill
SUMMER
32 degrees to 90 degrees – comfortable for outdoor play
90 degrees to 100 degrees – use caution. May be necessary to decrease outdoor time.
100 degrees or above – children should not go out.
**Temperature includes heat index
These are guidelines only and not meant to be a substitute for professional judgment.
In addition, if your student carries a blanket to stay warm at the bus stop or on the bus, we ask students to put their blankets away in their lockers or backpacks until they leave the building. Blankets are not allowed at school for safety reasons.
www.weather.com is a resource with temperature by zip code. Use the "feels like" temperature which includes the wind-chill or heat index.
The National Weather Service web page is where you will find a wind chill/heat index and other weather resources. http://www.weather.gov/
Thank you for your cooperation!
We CAN Say NO to Drugs!
In conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, the Gentry Guidance department is sponsoring the “We CAN say No to drugs” canned food drive October 22-26. In an effort to increase participation, we will use this opportunity as a competition between advisory classes. The advisory class with the highest weight of food donated will win a donut party! Donations can be brought in throughout the week and should be collected in advisory.
The Food Bank requests the following items as their most needed:
Canned meat, canned vegetables, canned fruit, boxed meals, cereal, peanut butter, bagged/boxed rice, bagged/boxed pasta, bagged/boxed beans, soup.
Red Ribbon Week October 22 - 26
Gentry students will have the opportunity to join millions of Americans in showing their support for a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by celebrating Red Ribbon Week. The Red Ribbon Celebration Week is a way to show intolerance for drugs in our schools, work places and communities as well as to celebrate the drug-free lives of the youth of our country. Jaguar Rumble - Update
Peanut Butter Drive
Every year, Gentry Middle School pairs with The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri to collect peanut butter for the Buddy Pack program. In the past, this has been a wildly successful drive thanks to parent support to feed hungry kids in our local area. Most years have seen an incredible response of at least 2,000 jars collected in a month, with Mr. Klepmke surrendering things like his hair and a little bit of dignity to encourage students to be active in helping their community. We have not decided what the sacrifice to his dignity will be this year, but last year he shaved off his beard! Other years have seen him shave off his hair on live TV, wear tutus and dye his beard.
We are asking for the 16 oz. jars of peanut butter to be brought to school throughout the month of October and into November. Mr. Klempke will either be in front of the school or in the gym every morning to collect it and pass out jolly ranchers in exchange.
Thank you for your support!
P.S. Please feel free to spread the word via social media as much as possible.
RBHS Band Assembly
The award winning Rock Bridge High School Band program is comprised of many Gentry alumni! They have won major awards both in Missouri and across state lines. The band recently traveled to Clarksville, Tennessee where they performed their show, "When the Clock Strikes Twelve". This creepy, frightening, yet fun production will be performed for all Gentry faculty and students during our upcoming RBHS Band assembly on Tuesday, October 23rd. Please see our modified bell schedule below for this day.
Fall Athletic Recognition Night
Our Fall Athletic Banquet will be held Wednesday, October 24th from 6:30-8:00 pm in the GMS Cafetorium. Our coaches use this evening to wrap up fall athletics (Football/Volleyball/Cross Country and Cheer Squad) by getting athletes, parents and coaches together one last time to enjoy dessert, review some season highlights and distribute awards. Hope to see you there!
Media Center Minute
The main iPad issue we are seeing in the media center this week is students that cannot connect at home. Students are forgetting that there are two steps to connect at home:
- 1 – Connect to WiFi (usually does this automatically) AND
- 2 – Connect to the iBoss filter (must do this manually EVERY DAY by going to Safari FIRST!)
Please remind your student that step 2 is necessary, or the iPad will not work.
OTIS Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough Fundraiser Order Pick Up
Students with orders of 3 or less items will be permitted to take their orders home with them on the bus. Please keep in mind that most orders require refrigeration so if your student will be remaining at school for an after school activity and riding the activity bus home, you may want to come to retrieve the items on your own at 2:35 or make other arrangements. Thanks for your support!
