Holiday season is approaching and scammers will try to get your personal information and money. Here are some tips from the Federal Trade Commission Consumer Information Website https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2019/10/what-you-can-do-fend-hackers.

  • Protect Your Phone- 1)Set your phone to lock automatically and create at least a 6 digit passcode, 2) Update your phone regularly- updates could include security updates, 3) Back up your phone regularly- if your phone is lost- you will still have your personal information, 4) Use an app to help you find your phone- it can lock it or erase it if necessary.

  • Protect Your Computer- 1) Protect your computer from malware by using security software and update your computer regularly 2) Use strong passwords
  • Keep Your Information to Yourself- 1) Phishing attacks by email or text try to get your passwords, accounts numbers, or other personal information by tricking you. Do not reply to these attempts with any personal information. When in doubt, call the company or bank directly to verify. 2) Callers may lie about Social Security Scams claiming to suspend your number and other threats.
  • Send Money on a Gift Card and Send the Numbers- Another scam is to send payments purchasing Gift Cards and sending the gift card numbers to the person. This is also a scam.

When in doubt, it's better to be safe than sorry. Here are a few more websites to check for scams. This site is also from the FEderal Trade Commission Consumer Information website on scams:
