Becoming Mindful
ideas and resources for School Counsellors
What is it?
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one’s attention to the present moment- our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surroundings Jon Kabat Zinn
When we are mindful means we observe your thoughts and feelings without judgement.
- We live as best as we can in the moment
- We are awakened to new experiences
- We live fully with focus
- We learn to let go of the failures of the past and the worries of the future
- We create a place and a space for living in the the present moment
Music to soothe you
According to Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson of Mindlab International, which conducted research on music's effect on overall anxious feelings, this music produced a greater state of relaxation than any other music tested to date.
Neuroscientists say music has a positive effect. Find out more about what they have to say.
GRATITUDE CHANGES PEOPLE
Dr. Alex Korb, in his article “The Grateful Brain,” tells us that practicing gratitude increases activity in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that is responsible for eating, sleeping, metabolism, and stress.
A regular gratitude practice increases dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for happiness and joy. Those who practice gratitude report greater levels of happiness so why wouldn't we be more grateful.
