The Heir

By Kiera Cass

The Heir by Kiera Cass centers around Eadlyn Schreave, daughter to the king and queen of Illéa. Her parents, Maxon and America, were brought together by The Selection. The Selection is a competition where 35 girls come to the castle as choices to become the future queen. Now it's Eadlyn's turn to find her king, only she refuses to. Eadlyn believes that "no one is more powerful than her", and having someone rule beside her does NOT fit in that picture. Despite her stubbornness, she starts falling for the suitors in little ways at a time. Through this new found vulnerability, Eadlyn learns that power doesn't necessarily mean bossiness. She discovers that she may need to make changes to her own character before finding someone else to love.

The setting of The Heir is the royal palace of Illéa, a future monarchy created after a war the United States had with Asia. As a result of losing this war, the United State of China was formed. Despite many attempts to gain freedom, the USC was eventually invaded by Russia. Once again under another country's control, the USC began to loose hope. Not until a moment of weakness arrived did they rebel, led by the one and only Gregory Illéa. Afterwards, Illéa was founded. Originally Illéa had a cast system, but due to events in the past books of this series, it no longer exists. Even though the citizens are happy with this change, they are beginning to feel doubts about having a monarchy

The royal palace is far from ordinary, with magnificent curtains adorning the abundant windows, and rooms upon rooms to explore. The palace also includes a rebel security system, which is no longer needed due to the peaceful rule of King Maxon. This security system contains many hidden safe rooms, from small ones in the hallways to the large safe room below the first floor for the royal family and their guests. Each bedroom has an entrance to this underground sanctuary, plus automatic locks on the panels used to enter. Not only are the interior decorations priceless and picturesque, but the decor for holidays and special events always have guests in awe. The palace is truly a picture from a fairy tale.

6 Best Quotes from The Heir by Kiera Cass
The entire Selection series have many quotes, and most of them are quite empowering.

"I'm Eadlyn Schreave and no one is more powerful than me." -Eadlyn Schreave

Eadlyn knows that she will rule the country one day, and she wants to be ready. Saying this into the mirror each and every morning gives confidence in what she can accomplish. The downside is is causes her to have a big head.

"You can be brave and still be feminine. You can lead and still love flowers. Most importantly, you can be queen and still be a bride." -Eadlyn Schreave

This statement is what starts to show Eadlyn's vulnerable side. Yes she may be posing for the camera in the moment, but Eadlyn's mind shows that it was far to easy for these words to come out of her mouth.

"I kept thinking that I couldn't live my life for other people, that love was nothing but chains. And maybe it was, but so help me, I needed these chains." -Ahren Schreave

Ahren Schreave is completely in love, and this passion is what shows Eadlyn that she needs this feeling in her life. Ahren understands the sacrifice and value in love, and this is what gives him motivation.

"There are some things you don't learn about yourself until you let someone else into the most intimate place of your heart." -Eadlyn Schreave

These boys are driving Eadlyn into places of her heart she's never been before. She's uncovered her flaws that she never saw evident, and it's shaking the foundation she's built herself on.

"When you know who matters to you, giving things up, even yourself, doesn't really feel like a sacrifice." -Ahren Schreave

Ahren may love his family, but Camille comes first. He continues attempting to show what he's discovered to Eadlyn, but her ears are plugged.

"I only have one heart, and I'm saving it." -Eadlyn Schreave

This may sound like an excuse, but Eadlyn truly hasn't found that spark her parents and Ahren have found. That's okay, because she has time to grow up at her own pace, whether or not Illéa is ready.

Connection to Music

Ed Sheeran - Tenerife Sea (Lyrics Video)
Tenerife Sea by Ed Sheeran is a beautiful representation of Ahren and Camille's love. The innocent sound of the song itself describes how this couple can become so involved with one another that the rest of the world seems at peace.

"You've got that kind of look in your eyes as is no one knows anything but us."

When Camille comes to visit Eadlyn watches the way she interacts with Ahren. She notices how when they look at each other they seem to be transported to another world, and that causes her to be overwhelmed with jealousy. Eadlyn aches to have the lumiére, or light, they have found.

"Cause all that you are is all that I'll ever need."

Ahren has found a partner who he's willing to sacrifice the life he has for. Once married to Camille he will become the heir to the throne of France. This means he will leave behind Illéa for good. Yes, he will visit, but there will no longer be the same connection between him and his siblings and parents.
